Solve : M$ Word issue?

Answer»

System has XP Home / SP2 with all current updates / AVG AV / Spywareblaster / Defender / Adaware all updated and run regularly.

Problem: M$ Word (Office 2003) will not copy & PASTE only under certain conditions. This has occurred on a Sony Vaio and a custom built system.

When you try to copy/paste, from an email or any other source, the application (M$ Word)hangs. I’ve had the client uninstall / reinstall & update Office. Also have done a repair of Office, all with the same results. I am able to open Word, create a document, then open a new Word document and copy/paste into it with no problem. I’m also able to open Excel, create some values in cells, and then copy/paste that into a Word doc (both the original and the 2nd opened one).

I installed OpenOffice and that works fine as an alternate (a better one that M$ crap) for the client and she likes it fine. I showed her all the advantages of OO and I hope she'll dump M$

Alan <>< I've seen this problem before. Hmm...

Does it make a difference exactly what is being pasted? Pasting from web pages for example can make Word appear to hang whilst it loads everything in.

Also, does it make a difference which method is used to paste? (i.e. Ctrl-V or right-click-->paste or Edit-->paste or clicking the paste button, etc)Hi Rob...how's things?

Does it make a difference exactly what is being pasted?
No, could be text or graphics

Nope, I've set and watched this thing try to paste simple text and it will sit there 'till the cows come home

Nope again. I tried the keyboard and the mouse with the same results

IMHO, these PEOPLE should NOT own a computer, let alone 3. They are old clients of mine and since I've moved 100 miles north I'm trying to disentangle myself from them. That's why I installed OO, which works beautifully Just checking Alan but have you had them run sfc /scannow yet ? ?You might try disabling Defender, i.e. stop it from running in real-time mode, and see whether that affects this. Is Spywareblaster also normally running in the background? If so, you might try disabling it, too, as a test.patio - no I haven't had them run sfc /scannow.

soybean - How would disabling Spywareblaster & Defender make a difference
I don't question your suggestions, just wondering why

BTW - I have to go back next week for different issues but will definitely take your both of your suggestions.

Thanks Well, sometimes we discover things by experiementation, right? I don't know whether disabling Defender and/or SpywareBlaster will have any affect on this, but I just think it's worth a try. Maybe there's some conflict among applications.

I have Defender installed but have disabled it from running in real-time mode. It seemed to cause a slight performance hit with my system. Besides, with my other protections in place, Defender never finds anything when I run a scan with it.Recently i READ a performance report on anti-malware apps and Windows Defender ranked dead last catching only 81% of the test baddies thrown at it...

I have pruned it from all my machines since then.

If needed i'll track down the report for you guys...it would be NICE to read patio if you dont mind finding it againDone...

Windows Defender is mentioned towards the end. Thanks patio. I'll definitely check this out next week when I go back for other issues on a different system.

Alan <>< thnx
