Answer» I have Windows Vista Ultimate x64 I restarted to install Windows updates and now none of my USB devices will work. This includes my mouse and keyboard (I do not have a PS/2 mouse or keyboard with which to troubleshoot)
The laser on the bottom of the mouse lights up when I am in POST and I am ABLE to MANIPULATE menus on i.e. choosing which OS to boot but when I boot into Vista, the light goes off and nothing works.
I have Windows 7 Installed (RC1) and that works with no problems! I put in the Vista CD to try and REPAIR the installation but it says that the disc is not the correct version of Windows (which is rubbish, it's the disc I used to install it) and the mouse and keyboard DO work here.
From all this, I deduce that it's definitely Windows that Is the problem (The same problem occurs in Safe Mode!!)
I'm kinda desperate now for any help that you can give me
Thanks Boo Boot into safe mode and go to device manager. Check under Universal serial bus controllers for errors. As I mentioned, the USB devices won't work in safe mode. I know this is very oddOkay, but are they listed in device manager? If they are, right click them all individually, and select Uninstall. Then reboot PC in normal mode and they will automatically re-install.The computer boots onto the desktop with no problems. From there, I cannot move the mouse or use the keyboard let alone opening device manager!
I'm assuming that any changes I make to 7 will have no effect on Vista? If it's hardware related, then I presume they will.
Okay, so if you can't move the mouse, press Start button, type "device manager", press enter. As soon as the window opens, press Tab and then use the down arrow to get to the USBs, then press the right arrow. Move down to one of them, press enter, then press tab three times. Press right arrow twice, press tab three or FOUR times depending on if "Roll back driver" is disabled or not.
After all that, you should be at Uninstall. Are you JOKING? Without meaning to be rude, I mentioned 3 times that the KEYBOARD AND MOUSE are both not working. Therefore, I cannot navigate to anything with the keyboard OR mouse.
Oh jeez I am asleep. I'm sorry about that, I wasn't actually trying to be funny.
I think you'll need another keyboard so, you'll have to get one somewhere.
