Solve : major system loss - i really need help?

Answer»

I have never had any probelms with this computer, go to turn it on today and get a message that reads:

WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

YOU CAN ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THIS FILE BY STARTING WINDOWS SETUP USING THE ORIGINAL SETUP CD ROM

When i put the cd in that it asks for, it then asks me to either insert a floppy disk, that I DONT have, or to enter the number that i want to use when rebooting it.

i dont have any number

can anyone please help me with this?

im running windows xp if this helps

jessHi,
Is your computer boot from CD-rom? And is windows just give the error file path not the whole filename(include path and file name)? Here is a link to the long-winded solution from the Mothership...

You MIGHT want to enlist the help of someone you know that is familiar with the procedures of properly backing up the registry or you could wind up with a machine that won't boot at all...
