Solve : me update hangs? |
|
Answer» k, problem 2. i just got a laptop for my girlfriend. it is running windows me with a pIII processor. i bought it USED and the previous user wiped the drive and did a fresh install before i got it. i logged on to windows update to update it and downloaded all of the security and critical packages, plus media PLAYER 9 and the latest direct x and IE and drivers for all. it is on a home network running a cablefree card (pre 802). when i boot the computer now it works fine until i put in the wireless card and start IE. it hangs and nothing is available except ctrl-alt-del which allows me to get around alittle but pretty much my only option is shutdown. i uninstalled everything i could find that i had installed (media player, IE) and did my best to revert to a previous state but one of the downloads said i couldnt revert back once i had downloaded it (but damned if i can remember which) so im stuck. anybody help PLEASE! thanksif this connected to the same network as the laptop my reply still stands....disable system restore and scan for bugs....try trend online scan...if you can....and get a firewall it helps...thanks for the reply, the laptop is on a different network that is maintained by my girlfriends father. this is the only network it has been on and it has only been on long enough to download the update softwarereload it again and disable winupates...control panel...right click on the update icon and chose...i will do it myself or words to that effect...one winme does not like ie6 and two wmp9...and disable system restore the bugs like to hide in here.... or cheat LOCATE the c:\windows options\cabs folder..next to the icon..is one called SETUP click this...it will re-install the system...no need for disks..and it will no lose any files...but chose the option i will update windows manualy...i would not update it myself ...i use winme and since no updates...no problems...weird...or if it aint broke dont fix -it...imho...sounds like the problem. thanks for the info, i will get back to you about the laptop after the weekend, hopefully with praise for your support and no more questions. using the trend service now, hope it fixes the desktop, thanks much |
