Solve : missing volume control?

Now I have no VOLUME controls.  I have no sound and checked my sound files, all windows sounds are showing they are there but I have not sound and no icon in the toolbar. 

Debbiewhat OS do you have?? are you sound DRIVERS ok?
what changes have you made to the system before this??I have Windows XP.  The only changes I've made was adding SCREENSAVERS. But the sound was working then.  Just the past two days the sound hasn't worked and the icon is gone.ok how are you sound drivers?? check device manager and tell me if they are any YELLOW ? or red x's anywhere

I've done that but there is nothing checked in any colorThe last thing I did when I turned off my computer yesterday was I installed the automatic updates, but I don't think that would cause any problem. ok. ummmm have you tried system restore

umm windows or computer manf.No I haven't tried system restore.  I will do that nowok
