Solve : Modem question? |
|
Answer» I recently (now, brace yourself) upgraded my OS from Windows 98 to XP. Now the modem that was installed on my machine back in 2002 was put in there to perform well with 98. it does seem now that my internet connections are not functioning as well as they used to. (Then again, I use a dial-up system.) So what should I do now? Get a new modem? Get a new driver? (Dumb question, I know!) My ISP OFFERS a hi-speed dial-up system that claims to be six to seven times faster than their normal dial-up for $15 a month as opposed to $10. Would anybody recommend that? Or should I take the plunge (being a rather thrifty guy) and opt for a $20 a month DSL? claims to be six to seven times faster than their normal dial-up for $15 a month as opposed to $10.This is perfect example of BS. Dial-up can't exceed 56K (practically less) no matter what. What they do, they cache web sites, you visit often, on their servers, so if you access it again, it'll load faster. But try new web page, and your speed will be same as before. For 5 more bucks, you can get DSL, and there you'll see the difference.47.8 was the best i ever got on dialup...Good memory, huh? Up to one/10th....LOLThat's cause i spent so much time TWEAKING it i know the number by heart... My personal highest on 56k was 49 but most times it was around 38.My speed on DSL is generally from 29-52 kbps however more than rarely i do enjoy speeds between 200-325 kbps. Is that ever a treat when it happens.truenorthStill recall 14.4k? I started with that thing, but since it was my first time on the net, I even didn't know "speed" word The browser was called Mosaic - grand-grand-father of Firefox. I had that 2 inches thick manual for it. It was year 1993.Wanna buy a Zoom 28.8 Modem with fax capabilities External ? ?Maybe...Picture?....LOL |
