Answer» The monitor is a 20" Samsung 206BW, and I just tested it; the particular model number is still recognized when I plug it into an XP desktop.
But I use it with my HP Vista laptop, and it is now listed as a "generic non-PNP monitor." It can still work with the laptop, but I cannot set the resolution to 1680 * 1050, which is the only resolution it likes.
Any idea why it is not being recognized as a 206BW anymore? Install monitor drivers. Either from the CD or Samsung website. I told it to SEARCH the driver CD, but it said the best driver was already installed. I manually selected the driver file, and now the monitor is listed as "Multiple Monitors," but I still can't select the right resolution. It shows many options, up to 2048 * 1536, but not the widescreen res that I want.Go to your device manager, make sure hidden devices are visible (See This) remove all devices related to the monitor.
For thoroughness' sake you'll want to get the latest video card drivers as well.
Restart the computer and then try to install the drivers again. Make certain that you select the proper input (Digital if you use the WHITE cable and analog if you use the BLUE cable) if you have a choice. Correction to previous post: the Display Settings shows it as "Multiple Monitors," but the Device Manager shows it as the 206BW. I think I've already tried uninstalling the driver a few times, but anyway, it seems like the list of resolutions offered is not related to the driver? And of course it's analog; laptops don't typically have digital outputs. Does it have an Nvidia video CHIPSET? Did you try configuring it using Nvidia's control panel? If you don't have this, you should probably install it to gain more control over your videocard.
The resolution attainable indeed depends on the monitor driver. If I'm not mistaken, your display settings have nothing to do with your problem. It sounds like you have a driver conflict when switching between your laptop and pc. I would recommend Uninstalling your drivers for the video, and getting the newest ones for your hardware off the manufacturers website that makes your video cards for your laptop, and your pc. Make sure to uninstall the old drivers before installing the new ones. When it says "multiple monitors" that just means you have more then one monitor hooked up to your pc or laptop, and the display will be displayed on both screens. This should only be the setting on your laptop, and not on your pc unless you have two monitors hooked up to your pc. But this definately appears to be a Driver problem!

A similar problem was never solved here: http://www.fixya.com/support/t322311-syncmaster_206_bw_driver_not_loading
And here someone suggests editing the registry, but I'm not sure I would do it right. :-/ http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t25118.html
Quote from: Raptor on December 17, 2008, 03:24:25 PM Does it have an Nvidia video chipset? Did you try configuring it using Nvidia's control panel? If you don't have this, you should probably install it to gain more control over your videocard.
The resolution attainable indeed depends on the monitor driver.
It's the Geforce Go 6150. The control panel doesn't let me select the monitor resolution.
Elliwigy, how could there be a driver conflict between the laptop and PC??? I don't use them with the monitor simultaneously.See if you can get the version with the control panel.
I am not aware of any registry tweaks for this problem so I can't help you there.Correction the solution IS in that link you posted according to one guy..
QuoteI had the same problem - mine was due to an automatic windows driver update.
Use this: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us (should get you the file: 169.25_forceware_winvista_32bit_english _whql.exe)
Hey, what a coincidence! That's just what I said.. Get the latest drivers!
Pay attention!

I already downloaded that 80MB file, and as someone else said on that site, the program was apparently not made for my graphics card. Also, I went to nvidia's notebook driver download page, and it was empty!?? But the problem may have been caused by an auto-update; I just can't get the new drivers. Try this tool, it will pretty much annihilate any and all references to your Nvidia videocard allowing you to start from scratch with the drivers: http://www.drivercleaner.net/ and possibly fix your problem if you just use the driver you used -before- the automatic update. Since the automatic update will most likely still be installed, it shouldn't overwrite it again? If it tries to, maybe you can 'hide' the update in Windows Update.
Be absolutely 100% sure that you READ the INSTRUCTIONS otherwise you'll end up messing up Windows.
There used to be a freeware version, don't know if they still offer it for free but I'm sure you're a resourceful guy. Sorry for the delay... Anyway, I installed Windows 7 on a different partition, and have the same problem; I conclude that some hardware failure prevents the laptop from DETECTING the monitor's model / supported screen resolutions. Is there anyway to manually set the screen resolution?
