Answer» XP Home SP.2 Intel PIIIE 1gb 256 Ram Mobo Epox EP.3SPA 160G hdd.
Had lots of 'file corrupt' MESSAGES which turned out to be caused by a ram stick going down (Memtest86 showed this). Decided that it was time for a clear out so reformatted drive & reinstalled XP Home.
Since the clear out no PS.2 mouse is detected (tried four which known to be good). Any serial mouse is detected and no other problems. With a PS.2 mouse installed Device Manager shows no pointing device at all. The serial mouse only is shown EVEN if both PS.2 and Serial are connected, and of course the serial mouse when on its own is shown.
The XP disk is genuine from MS as is the SP.2 disk and I have successfully installed XP Home from this disk on this hardware on more than ONE occasion without problems. No errors are displayed on bootup or at any other time.
Appreciate any guidance with the problem.
ThanksTwo things come to mind:
1. the mouse port has taken a dump "(tried four which known to be good)" or the port somehow got disabled in the BIOS.
Alan <>< Did you by any chance unplug your ps2 mouse while the computer was still running recently? Or maybe it came loose? I haven't experienced it myself, but I've heard that if you unplug a ps2 mouse with the computer on, it has about a 1 in 4 chance of blowing some fuse on the motherboard. Thanks for the replies. Now find I have also LOST both usb ports so some trauma has occurred on the mobo... Can't think of anything which would have caused it.
Ah well, she was a long and faithful friend...
