Solve : msconfig diagnostic setting?

Answer»

Okay - Go to msconfig, General Tab, Selective Startup, make sure that the FOLLOWING boxes are CHECKED: Process System.ini, Process Win.ini, (and here is your problem, I think) Load System Services, Load Startup Items. If you have some startup items deselected on the Startup Tab, this will only show partially selected.

Let me know how you make out.No luck.    Just to go back to the onset of the problem - it happened when I went to msconfig to try Diagnostic setup, since the computer was slowing a bit.  Could not return to normal operation after that.

Thanks for your help.  It's appreciated. What happens when you select the Selective Startup option on the General Tab?When I go to msconfig,  Selective Start, regardless of whether I click the boxes below (which I've done in all combinations) or not, I still have the same results.  No improvement in the operation.

I get the same results whether I use Normal, Diagnostic, or Selective.

Sure hate to be taking up your time, but really appreciate your inputs.

Your symptoms all point to the fact that you have turned off necessary Windows services. When you select Selective Start and have the first 4 items checked, does it let you 'OK" and re-boot?I'm not sure my last reply to your question went through.  I can't find it in the listings. Anyway, trying again.  In answer to the question, yes - OK and reboot comes up after I click on Selective in msconfig, regardless of whether I have clicked on everything under Selective, or not.  I've tried it all ways.

I agree that something critical in Win services is missing.  Sure would like it back!Travel Here...

Thanks, Patio.

Exnavy, if I were you, I would print out Patio's link, pick your flavor of Windows, go to Start>Run>type services.msc and adjust all services to the status shown in the link.

For example, if you have XP Home SP2, right-click the Alerter service and select 'disabled'; right-click on the Application Layer Gateway Service, and select 'manual.' Go all the way down the list and set each service as specified. Further, I would make sure that my selection in msconfig was Selective Startup with the first 4 boxes checked.

Then re-boot, cross your fingers and let us know.!Great!  I'll be working on the setup later today, and will report results immediately.

Thanks again to you, Patio, and everyone else who has helped.Wahoo!  Changed 57 settings on services.msc to conform to list forwarded by you guys - rebooted - and on line!!

Only question still is why is the taskbar background WHITE, still?  That was one of my first indications of trouble - but I don't care as long as things worki.

Many, many thanks.  I did try to set msconfig to Selective with items below  activated, as directed, but it reverted to Normal when I rebooted  after clicking Selective.  I just went ahead to services.msc, anyway.

Where can I go to learn more about the individual  default settings?  Something sure changed everything initially,  but with your information, I'm back in business.  I just hope I don't throw it back into limbo again and would like to learn enough to keep that from happening..  Sure is a nice day - isn't it??  Thanks   Thanks   ThanksGreat job

Normal startup is FINE. Which individual default settings do you want to learn about? Try Google and you can ask questions here. Answers here will mean more (and you'll be better able to filter out the well-intentioned but wrong answers) if you Google first.

Now that you're a Services expert, go here: http://www.blackviper.com/. Lots of great stuff that ought to answer many questions that you may have. Click on your OS on the front page and you can adjust the Services that you so carefully just set, according to his "Safe" settings. While you're there, it would be a good idea to check your settings against the 'default' settings -black viper's content is newer than the list you used before.

Taskbar: Not sure why it's still white. Try: right-click on empty spot on desktop>Properties, select Appearance tab, make sure that color scheme is blue. You may need to re-boot.Now here's one thing that I still see as a problem:
System Restore had no restore points.

Could you right click "My Computer" and go to "Properties" and under "System Protection/System Restore" ensure that System Restore is enabled? And then click "Create a Restore Point" so it will be easier to correct this problem if it happens again in the future?

Also, check and make sure your virus protection is up to date, and then run a scan.

This is normal when the Windows services are disabled. That was one of the clues!

Restore point set!  Will visit BlackViper and explore.  I am happily impressed with the responses, cooperation and info from all of you who took the time to help, and especially with the fact that you didn't give up when I had negative reports on what happened.

I'll close this thread and  know where to run if problems show up in the future.

Cheers.
