Solve : MSN question?

Answer»

Hello

I have an old version of MSN (4.7) which works OK, but wanted to download a NEWER version. I am using XP home, but I get 'installer file' problems when I try to install it.

What might be the cause of that, please?

Thanks.

High1What does the error say?

Hello Spoiler

Thanks for your post.

If I try to download MSN 2011 from the explore.live site I am asked to save/run wlsetup-web.exe. I click to save it to my C drive, and then run, but then it says C:\wlset-web.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

I then try to insall 2010 (messenger.exe) from a third party site, and I get the FOLLOWING:

Installer integrity check has failed. Common causes include INCOMPLETE download and damaged media.

If I then try for MSN 2009 from the windows live site that asks me to save the wlsetup-web.exe,
and the error I get then says: IE cannot download wlsetup-web.exe from wl.dlservice.microsoft.com. The
connection with the server was reset.
.

I am not sure how accurate those error messages are.

Thanks

High1I get the same problem and have not found a solution yet. Hope to hear of one soon.Messenger 2011 requires Windows 7 or Windows Vista.
Oh, right, thanks for that Rustys.

Still, I should be able to use a version later than 4!

Thanks.

High1You are welcome

Yes you may the LINK is included is

http://explore.live.com/windows-live-Messenger-XPHello Rustys,

Thanks for the link.

That refers to this file (the one I mentioned above): wlsetup-web.exe. I cannot 'run' that file because I get a MESSAGE saying: Coouldn't install programs. Use Windows Update to download the latest version of Windows Installer, and try again.

The Microsoft site tells me - looks like this is where the problem might be - that 'the following updates were not installed: Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1; and Update for Windows XP (KB898461).

So, basically that will be why I can't update Messenger.

I might take a look at that KB article

Thanks again.

Yes, looks like I have Messenger 2009!

Many thanks.

The problems was I didn't have those two updates (although Windows Update is set to automatic). If you don't have those, you need to look for them on the MS site (not the easiest thing), but at least it's resolved now.

Many thanks!
