Answer» Hi
My laptop froze the other night, and wouldn't respond to anything i did, and so i had to manually take out its battery to turn it off. I think it froze again once i restarted it so i took out the battery a second time.
Now, i cant GET to the desktop at all, my laptop keeps restarting.
What happens is that i get this screen below:
No matter which option i choose, i don't get past this screen:
This screen is on for about 3 seconds and then the laptop restarts itself, and begins this cycle again.
Much thanks in advance to anybody who can help
Thanks. If you have the XP OEM CD, I'd try a Repair. Insert the CD and boot off of it and when it searches for prior windows, it will prompt you with F3 to quit, R for Repair, or "Enter" ( I believe ) to install a new Windows XP install to HD.
Hope this helps!
DaveIt may be hardware problem. RAM? If you have more, then one RAM sticks, try one at a time.1. What is the Make and Model Number of the laptop?
2. Reset the Laptop. It may not be necessary to remove the battery to shut your laptop off. HP notebooks apparently have a reset button somewhere on their case. They recommend the following procedures in the order given if the notebook has stopped RESPONDING and will not let you turn it off: o If possible shutdown Windows. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL, then select Shutdown, Restart. or o Press and hold the power button for at least four seconds until the display shuts down. Unsaved data will be lost. Press the power button again to restart. or o Insert the tip of a paperclip into the reset button (hole) on the bottom of the notebook, then press the power button to restart.
2. Can you access the Windows Advanced Options Menu at startup?
Power up the computer, tapping the F8 key about once per second or faster. You should see the Windows Advanced Options Menu. If it's available, select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" item to stop the reboot cycle. Hopefully INSTEAD of rebooting, it will now stop on a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). If you get BSOD, copy the "exact" error message text and numbers and post them in this thread. This information can be used to search Microsoft Knowledge Base and/or Internet for possible causes and resolution, but it needs to be DONE on "exact" substrings; so please record the error message data carefully.
You may not see the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" item on the menu. I believe it appears starting with Windows XP SP2. I've also seen at least one Windows XP SP2 laptop that didn't include it.
If you get a "Select Boot Device Menu" when you tap the F8 key, see the following link: what genius decided F8 should be device boot menu
In reply to the first reply, i don't think i have the XP OEM CD, i can't find it anyway.
In reply to the second reply, i don't understand. Sorry I'm pretty much a noob with stuff like this. I haven't altered any internal stuff in my laptop, ever.
In reply to the third reply, my laptop is an Evesham laptop, and I'm unsure as to how to find out the model number.
I managed to choose the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" option, and i got to the blue screen.
The technical code at the bottom of the screen was:
*** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x843D1378, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)
Thanks for all the help, i really appreciate it, all of you.Quote A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions. Start with the above suggestions...I can't do that though, because i can't get to the desktop screen you dont need to access windows to use chkdisk or scandisk. it runs from a dos prompt but i am not really sure how to get to it....Any ideas then let me know.
thanksQuote How to run checkdisk from recovery console (Windows xp). Courtesy dsenette
1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer. Note:Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so. 2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console. Note:If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console. 3. When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator PASSWORD. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER. 4. At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following then press Enter:
chkdsk /r
5. Allow this to run UNDISTURBED until completed (45 min or so) 6. Report any errors Kudos to starjax...
