Basically, when i load my presario compaq, it loads up to my desktop, but doesnt load up the start bar or anything, it just shows the picture background i have.
I can run programmes but only via task manager, it is just irratating that i cant have a normal desktop....
any ideas?
Could it have something to do with a virus or maybe lack of memory?

Do this. from your task manager go to File...new task and type in "compmgmt.msc" Under the Event Viewer look for any RELEVANT errors under the "System" Category. SEE if maybe there is anything referring to a service not starting or a process terminating abnormally. If there are some errors tell us what they are. The easiest thing may be to run a system restore back to a time when you know the computer was working properly.C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SysEvent.Evt
it says system error records and it TODAYS date, it says it is a system control manager error and is repeatedly seen when i switch on my laptop....
this is all such a FOREIGN language to me!

Just out of curiosity is anything at all currently connected to a USB port on this computer? I guess you have already tried doing a hard shut off and rebooting with the same result?it isnt connected to a usb, and is a hard shut off just a shut down, battery out, leads out thing?

Also in ref to the "system restore back to the last known working time", how exactly do i do that from the taskmanager?

What Windows version? Does it boot to Safe Mode?computer specs pls
"rstrui" runs system restore.I am back! all probs resolved thanks to safe mode, a virus check, and some major removal of pics and videos to a external memory stick.....not sure what actually resolved the PROB but the main thing is it is AOK!
