Solve : Need help cleaning out Windows file?

Answer»

I have a computer which's C:/ drive only has 100MB free out of it's 74GB. Now, there is literally nothing on the computer besides google chrome and firefox and like malwarebytes. I found that the WINDOWS file is taking all the room, it says
Size: 110GB
Size on disk: 70.6GB

I really don't want to kill this computer by accidentally deleting an essential Windows file, but I know that something is wrong here and need some help so that I may find which of the hundreds of files within WINDOWS is taking up all the space and know if it's safe to remove.

Thanks for any help.Do you have an external storage device for backup? Does the computer have anything really important?
If you have the original install CD and the product key, just do a full install after wiping the disk with a program  made for nuking the whole drive.

Make sure you have a backup important data.Yea, that's what I wanted to do. But, the computer has installed a program that costs about $2000 and only works on this computer. Reinstalling windows would render the program useless, even if I backed it up(I think it may only have allowed one install).

But, anyway, I WENT through and made sure and the files and folders inside WINDOWS definitely don't add up to 70GB, they don't even go higher than like 6GB. Does anyone have an idea without having to wipe the drive?Forget about wiping the drive.
OK, I see your  problem.  For a $2000 program, another answer is needed.
Best answer is too buy a new hare drive and clone the hard drive,. The use the new, LARGER drive and  but keep the original as the backup.
This is the safest and most conservative solution.

Right now, the older style hard drive, PATA, is the best WAY to add life to an old PC. Expect almost a 50% increase in performance by having more free space. But trying to sort out what is taking so much space is a tough nut.

I see 160 GB drives for under $20. Very economical upgrade for an old PC.

1) Your first post says Windows is taking up 110Gb on a 74Gb drive. PLEASE explain.

2) Download TreeSize and see where the space is being taken. You COULD have malware (you do not indicate that you have an anti virus app installed) or it could be elsewhere - let's see

It's taking up 70.6GB on the disk.I'm just wondering where this $2000.00 app is from...Go to Control panel, Add/Remove programs and total up all the programs you have there. This will give us a better idea what's on your harddrive.Probably System Restore & all the Windows update taking up the space.

Have you run chkdsk lately, if not try running that. Seems you may have some cross linked files or corrupted files.

this is a description of how to use the command
