Solve : Need help making a computer 'stuff-up' proof.?

Answer»

I have a spare computer running tinyxp.
I have setup the computer and put games on it (from www.gamemakergames.com).
Now im going to set it up at my grandmothers so my cousins (5 and 2) can play on it.

I want to be able to :
Stop them from accidentally moving and deleting games from the DESKTOP.
Disable right click. - Found the solution to this. (Registry tweak).
Stop them from viewing/accessing/opening any Folders (My documents, My computer ect.).
Clear out everything in the Start> all programs menu.
Make the only shutdown and log off visible in the start menu.

I think thats about it. I will edit if i think of more.

Now for the pc SPECS:
OS: TinyXP
RAM: 128 MB
Processor: Intel Celeron

The OS is probably the only one you want but i put the others just in case.

Thanks.

BTW: Whats better Celeron? or Pentium 1?For Processors:
You are going to have to give us more information on what type of processor you are looking at. Pentium 1's are ancient, and probably not a good solution. As for Celeron: They are not bad... but they arent great. Try a CoreDuo, or a Pentium 4.  (wait for other users input first)

TinyXP, is hardly a complete version of XP. I dont understand why you would want to use it. How much HDD space do you have? Perhaps you should convert back to a regular Windows XP instalation.

The best solution for your problem is most likely to set up user accounts. This will keep all desktop settings, icons, etc seperate from your account.

Click Start>Settings>User Accounts
Create an account for your cousins. You can give them individual accounts, or just set up one account for them, or use the guest account. Make sure to give them "Limited Access" accounts! This will prevent them from making changes to your user account settings.

After you do that, be sure to give your own account (the one you use now) a password.

Disabling deletion of some certain folders, right click, etc, may require commercial software... which requires money...
Giving them limited user accounts should be fine. Guest account is also suitable...
Giving yourself a password for your account assures you that they cant get into your account.

If you need further assistance, feel free to ask The reason why i said Celeron or Pentium is because the spare computer currently has a Celeron, but i i have a spare Pentium 1 processor. I really don't want to fork out money for a core duo.

I have the regular xp installation cd, but i don't want to have to go through with all the activation stuff. Thats why i put on tinyxp.

I set up all the accounts, but my cousin still easily messes things up easily. Not as in uninstalling and deleting random things. More moving and renaming by accident. (He is only 5, and this is the first year that he has been using computers).

I'm going to use Google, but would you recommend any programs to do this?

Thanks.

Edit: I have a 20GB HarddriveIf you do have a celeron in that PC already its going to be better than a Pentium 1 as celerons didn't come out until the Pentium 3 generation.

As for stooping the users from messing up the PC Do as Z says and make time limited access accounts, you can use the group Policy EDITOR if you want to set more specific restrictions but thats probably a bit advanced for your needs

Also XP wont run very well on 128 megs off ram, i would suggest you run win 2000 or win 98 instead.

in windows 2000 you can set the rights for every user on ever folder.. you can on XP as well but you need to change a few things first. they made it harder to do because off all the people who denyed there users rights to the windows and program files folders and then couldn't login to there PCs ... Okay i will stick with Celeron.

Ive got limited accounts, but unfortunately that isn't limited enough.

I really want to run xp. It seems to be working fine right now, and im not going to have much on it.

Would it be okay to remove the cd rom and floppy drives? (I have a 2yr old cousin who climbs chairs to jam computers with toys.)

ThanksUnfortunately I can not help on the software side of things in this regard, though about removing the drives I would highly discourage it - you could live without a floppy but without a CD drive your PC in the long run would be adversely affected. Unless of course if you have flash drives for storage?

May I recommend a case such as the Lian Li PC-101, which has a lockable front panel - though this particular model may be a bit expensive for the purpose it is a way that you could restrict this sort of physical damage.

Also, if the above is not appropriate then I'm sure there is a program I've heard of that can lock the CD Drive from being opened, if that would restrict the damage? If you don't want to BUY a new case:
Why don't you go and fine a cabinate, drill a hole in the back, and lock the cabinate. That way, they cant actually get to the actual computer.
Just make sure the computer doesn't get too hot if you do. With a Celeron I doubt it will, but can't be too careful I guess.. Quote from: jahuro on July 17, 2007, 04:33:58 AM

Do you know if TinyXP is based on Home or Pro?

If it's pro, go into the Control Panel under the Folder Options.  Under the View tab, at the very bottom, if you see "Use simple file sharing (recommended)," uncheck it.  This allows you to see all of the security settings allowed through the gui.

After this point, right-click an object (file or folder), go to Properties, and go to the Security tab.  In here, you'll see a list of user accounts at the top, and at the bottom you'll see permissions.  Select the account you want to restrict, and then in the permissions at the bottom, click "Deny" next to the ones you want.  For a lot of stuff, you could probably only allow read access to the file, so they can't rename it.  Be careful with this though -- some programs will need write-access to work properly, for saving settings and what-not.

Unfortunately if it's XP Home, these options won't be available to you. Quote from: beanhead07 on July 17, 2007, 08:18:23 PM

Celerons actually run quite hot and can be prone to overheating. Thats one of many reasons why they are now considered to be outdated. For example my CPU is immensely more powerful than a Celeron though it runs at nearly 1/2 the temperature. 25-35C / 50-70C
