Answer» Alright so im pretty upset because my new Gateway dx4200-09 model that i got 3 months ago is starting to act up... and of course my warranty is expired... hooray. So basically about a week ago it was routine I was on a secure online game... (WoW) and it just freezes up and i have to turn it off. It stops til the next day and then it does it again... occasionally a blue screen with words pops up because it disappears really fast. So I run a virus check- None found. It keeps happening so I give in and restore it to factory settings... I re-load all my games and disks and a few hours later... BAM. It happens again. It crashes or freezes or restarts itself on pretty much anything... internet, word, games, anything. No idea WHATS going on... but ive restarted the thing about 3 times... really not wanting to buy a new one. *Also, if it matters: I also installed an Nvidia 9600 graphics card about a month prior to crashes... but I dont see how it could be affecting it just now. Tried it all... updating drivers... anything I could think of... nothing cures the spontaneous dying. In all regards to other answers... I had already bought a 500w PSU with my graphics card.. so thats not the problem.
ANY HELP AT ALL WOULD BE AMAZING!! Let me know if there is any more information you need to help me and ill try to find it. I used to be a TECHNICIAN and typically if blue screen isnt a virus its a hardware issue I would first try a different virus program (a trial will do if you don't have another one) and if that DOESNT pick up and thing I have some hardware diagnostic software that will check and see what hardware is failing and if non of your hardware is failing the las thing you would need to do is reinstall your OS.Need to know the stopcode and any drivers mentioned on the blue screen. To give you time to READ it follow these steps;
1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System 2. Go to Advanced 3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings... 4. Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"
The new graphics card may be demanding more power than your power supply can provide. Not that the 9600 is a particularly demanding card, but given that we don't know what rating your PSU is, it's a possibility.Your Gateway has an onboard 300w psu. The Nvidia 9600 comes in two different WATT capabilities 96 watt and 59 Watt.
The 59 Watt card requires a minimum 300W PSU. The 96 Watt card requires a minimum 400W PSU.
Those numbers right there should tell what's wrong. Upgrade your onboard PSU. TD has a 750W for $89.00. Good luck.This may be a heat issue.........make certain all heatsinks and fans are free of dust, check fans are working, check memory is seated and check cpu is firmly in place. You've been inside the case so something may have been disturbed and you were not aware.How is a 3 month old Gateway out of warranty ? ?Maybe new "refurbished"
