Solve : Need help. Users problem?

Answer»

I have a problem when i create a new user account. I will log on to that account and it will say preparing desktop, the normal thing it says when a new user is logging on. Once logged on i will add a shortcut to the desktop and it works. When i log off and log back on, it says preparing desktop....as if it was a new user! When logged on, the desktop is empty, only having the starting icons. When i go to the desktop folder for that user, it still has those shortcuts in there, they just aren't on the actual desktop.

Now...for a little background info that might help with an answer.

I was using Vista home edition until recently i got my hands on Vista Ultimate. When installing i did not get the option to just upgrade and keep all my files the same, i had to choose the option of installing like it was a new OS. So it MOVED all my files into Windows.old. When Ultimate was INSTALLED i just copied everything out of Windows.old into the appropriate places in the new folders. Including the users...i figured it might create the users, but it didn't. Once everything was copied over i made new users and now I'm stuck with this problem.

Just a SIDE note, this problem doesn't occur on the main account that was FIRST created when installing Ultimate. Everything works fine on that account, this problem only occurs with newly created accounts.

Any help is appreciated....thanksI can say that windows likes to do most things its way. There are migration tools to do what you wanted to do automatically in regard to users being migrated. All I can say is to stop MANUALLY trying to adjust things and look into it farther before you begin an install. You actually need an upgrade version of the latest windows you installed over the previous one.  I don’t have a fixall answer at this time but wanted to share this with you before you make a similar mistake.
