Solve : netscape mail problem?

Answer»

Hi Folks......Please help a computer illiterate!  I've used Netscape Mail (Netscape 7.1) for years with no problem.  (I know, why am I not using Outlook Express??)  ANYWAY, when I tried to download my email yesterday, I got an error message "Unable to write mail to mailbox.  Make sure the system allows you write privileges and you have enough disk space to copy the mailbox."  I'm stumped....any thoughts?  Thanks!  BTW, I did compress the files. If you are receiving this error, then try the following workarounds:

Compact your folders
Even though you have emptied your Trash folder, those deleted files still remain in the folder, on the HD, until the Mail is compacted

If no joy, then with the program closed:
Open Windows Explorer
Navigate to your Mail folder, and delete all files with an MSF extension
Don't delete the files without the MSF extension, as they contain your mail. See: Profiles Folder Location

Still having the problem?

Use your ISP Webmail Interface, delete any spam messages, or those with no message body.
Delete anything that looks suspicious to you.

Next:

Close the application:
Open the profile's Mail Account folder ...\MAIL\pop.ISP.net
Rename the Inbox file with NO MSF extension, to OldInbox, and delete the Inbox.msf file.
When the Mail window is reopened you should see a pristine Inbox folder and a folder named Oldinbox.

If you are unsuccessful with the above workarounds, then create a new Profile, as outlined in this guideline:

Actually, I quite understand why you do not use Outlook Express. HOWEVER, I do wonder why you're not using Thunderbird?

More information needed: Disk space, OS, etc.Is Netscape your ISP or do you just use Netscape mail?  Hi Guys....Thanks for your replies.  Ref Raptor's and SOYBEAN's questions, I use Netscape mail, but SBC for the ISP.  The laptop is a newer Dell Inspiron 6000 with a 75 gig drive, 55gigs available.  For Sysfix, I'm working me WAY through your suggestions, but no favorable results yet.  This is troubling:  One moment the email function works normally.  With boot-up the next morning, I have the problem.  All other computer functions seem to be O.K.   Thanks for your continuing helpsysfix gave you some detailed steps.  Have you gone through that?

Have you thought about converting your mail over to SBC?  Since they are your ISP, you would have technical support from them.  You could use Outlook Express with SBC or download Thunderbird and use it.   Quote

Have you tried emptying your inbox by logging into webmail? Perhaps it got full..Well friends...This is getting a little more complicated.  I'm no longer able to bring up the Netscape 7.2 browser.  I UNINSTALLED 7.2, and also uninstalled McAfee Viruscan.  Then, I downloaded and re-installed Netscape 7.2.  It appeared to go through the installation process, but won't respond to a click on the browse icon.  I uninstalled 7.2 once again, and downloaded and installed 8.0   As 8.0 was installing, I noticed that it was importing bookmarks, cookies, etc from 7.2, but NOT email!  Now, with 8.0 fully installed, there doesn't seem to be a way to access email through my ISP.  8.0's only email capability seems to be third party like hotmail, yahoo, etc.  Am I overlooking something?  Thanks, as always, for your imputs.
