Solve : New computer, same old problem? |
|
Answer» The user's old computer decided to crash and she bought a new one from Dell. Optiplex 360 loaded with xp pro 500gb hd and 4gb memory. We added Office, AVG, Ad-aware, Spybot, Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, the latest FLASH and Shockwave, Itunes, Belarc advisor, AOL 9.0 and Firefox. can I rename IE to iexplorer.ex_Why? Simply don't touch it. Is it IE8?in either case the file is iexplore, not iexplorer.Where are my eyeglasses? Thanks for the replies, allow me to clarify. Ok, I got the name wrong, but the question still stands. The user does not touch IE and it is 7 not 8. When she opened up an internet window in the AOL client and then closed it IE opened up a window with multiple tabs where each tab was the page she just closed in AOL. I want to know if renaming IE in it's folder will in some way affect operations of the computer aside from getting updates? For the updates I can show her how to reset the name, get the updates and rename IE. But if renaming IE makes the computer unbootable what other options are there? This is some mess between AOL browser, which is based on IE engine, and IE itself. I don't even want to go there, because I never used AOL, I barely use IE, so I simply don't know what's going on here. Maybe someone else with better knowledge will pop in here.Don't worry. I wasn't nitpicking over the name; Just making sure, since there is Explorer.exe, which is important, and iexplore, for IE. If you renamed explorer by accident, it would prevent booting, so I was just making sure there wasn't any confusion on that regard. renaming IE will not make the PC unbootable, though. Most components that use IE rendering (for example, help files) use the DLLs and not the EXECUTABLE, (although there are exceptions). Just try renaming it, and see what works, and what doesn't. One other option, is to try setting the Preferred program (set program access and defaults) to Firefox for browsing (if that hasn't been done already). Thanks again. Firefox is the default browser, but on closing IE is the one that opens up. I will rename iexplore and let you know. |
