Solve : New folders are sent to the wrong place?

Answer»

After much work today on my computer, I retreived files and folders out of a "desktop" folder, and placed them all in a new desktop folder. Why you ask? Here we go.....

The "desktop" folder that I retrieved the files from were located in c:\Documents and Settings\user\cookies\desktop

The reason i wanted them moved is because:

1. I don't think my Desktop folder is supposed to be there.

2. Anytime I drag and drop ANYTHING on my desktop i get---"This page has an unspecified security flaw. Would you like to continue?" (option is yes or no)

3. On the desktop, if I clicked in ANY FOLDER(besides My computer), and then clicked on a SHORTCUT, I would get this prompt----"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissons to access them."

This being said, I relocated all of my desktop folders from C:\Documents and Settings\User\Cookies\Desktop                       to
C:\Documents and Settings\all users\desktop      (by way of copy and paste)

Why put the folders in this location?

Because there were two files in there: (my INTERNET connection shortcut, and adobe reader shortcut)-These two shortcuts were the only shortcuts on my desktop that were still accessible. They NEVER were affected by those stupid prompts.

So now when i create a folder ON MY DESKTOP, and check the properties, it is located in: c:\Documents and Settings\user\cookies\desktop

When I create a shortcut from any folder in c:\Documents and Settings\all users\desktop

copy and paste to my desktop(now i have a shortcut icon on my desktop)

When i click that shortcut it gives that "Windows cannot open....."...same thing as before

When I create a shortcut from any folder in c:\Documents\all users\desktop

copy and paste TO AN EMPTY SPACE IN C:\Documents\all users\desktop

Then go to my "normally viewed desktop"

The shortcut is there and it works.

I have to take an extra step to create shortcuts that are really a hastle.
So apparently my folders that are on my desktop work fine.
But when i CREATE anything on them, they are routed or located or whatever you want to call it to c:\Documents and Settings\user\cookies\desktop

For info, I cant delete that desktop folder that is in the cookies

Thanks for reading this novel...all help would be appreciated

You did What ? Did you try deleting the "cookies" folder? I don't think it should be there at all. What else is in it? Have you had any virus trouble?i want my cookie folder to stay there,

if i used an unlocker program to delete the C:\documents and settings\user\cookies\desktop file, would it then route anything i do ON MY DESKTOP TO C:\Documents and settings\all users\desktop             cause if i do stuff "there" any functions i do on my desktop, they work                  no virusesWhy do you want the cookies folder to stay there if it's not supposed to be there?
The only cookies folder I have is in Documents and Settings\Default User
Documents and Settings\MyUsername doesn't have a cookies folder
Neither does Documents and Settins\All Users
Your desktop shortcuts should be under
Documents and Settings\Username\DesktopYou know, when I tried to help in your other thread I couldn't understand how your desktop folder got into your cookies folder. But after reading your post above it appears you are the cause of all of your own problems - as is generally the case in this world, isn't it?I was very appreciative of you last time Allan, and thanked you. And now I get this. All I was doing was looking for some help. So, thanks again.I wasn't trying to attack you Clint. It's simply that if you'd explained your propensity for doing things like this in your first thread it would have helped to explain everything. No worries, apparently I screwed up something with the registry in my windows program, and am CONSIDERING re-installing xpI think that's probably a good idea. And in the future, when you install a program and want it to go to a SPECIFIC location, just specify that location during the installation process. But don't move system folders around if you can help it.The reason for the error messages and lack of access is the all users folders are system folders.
This is how the OS is setup...ATTEMPTING to edit or change that just creates issues.

The easiest way to check this in future is in Folder Options turn off/uncheck "show system files and folders".
Then you will see if the folder you are working with is a system folder or not...system folder = best left alone.
