Solve : NEW HARD DRIVE -- I need help tweeking settings back to the way I like them.?

Answer»

Hi everyone. THANKS SO MUCH for all the previous help but my PC finally died. I had Best Buy back-up some files which I can not get to run. (I will get to that shortly) I purchased a new 160 GB Western Digital hard drive and had it installed.

Thank God!! I have internet an connection again....

Ok, I ran my Olympus (Digital Camera) CD so my 'new' pc recognizes it. All is good!

QUESTION NUMBER ONE:

Where are my photos being saved?? I can not find them. They used to go to a MY PHOTOS folder but I do not see a My Photos folder.

HELP PLEASE!

Oh....I am not very technical so go easy with the terms & explainations.

THANKS!!! Hopefully they copied the pics back to your hard drive.
I am assuming that you are running WinXP

Open MY COMPUTER
Double click C:
Click SEARCH FOR FILES and FOLDERS
Click PICTURES, MUSIC or VIDEOS
Click the box next to PICTURES & PHOTOS
Click SEARCH

If your pictures are there they will start displaying.
Once completed you can copy them to your MY Pictures directory. They maybe in another folder.
Thee is a search program you can use to locate photos.
If you have XP you should click Start then Search an a mottle dog COMES up and you answer his questions and wait a bit.Yes, XP. (sorry for not stating that)

I did what you both suggested and all I see is pics that came with the pc. (Fish, WATERFALLS, ballons & other crap I will never use & will likely fill my pc up in time) Need to rid of all the crapware but that can be done later.

I saved 7 photos earlier wheile I was in my Olympus program editing a few pics. I chose SAVE and then SAVE AS. I just went back into Olympus to see if I could 'pretend' to save another and I now see it they are being saved under a random file name. (Example: P4012728)

Did not locate anything when I did the searches you suggested in PICTURES, MUSIC & VIDEO.

Where else could they be hiding???Hmmmmmmmm Or maybe they are going here....

C:\Program Files\OLYMPUS\OLYMPUS Master\TemplateData

Still can't find them but I think that is where they are saved.

TOTALLY LOST There is an option to show file extensions.
Tools>Folder optins>view
find the box with HIDE Extensions for knowwm...
Make sure it is clear, no check.
Also do put a check the one that say show full path name.
Now do the search again, all files and folders named *.JPG

And when you go back to the Olympus program, see if it now shos the full path as well as the file extensions.Quote from: Geek-9pm on APRIL 01, 2009, 06:50:46 PM

Same search, different way of initiating. If you're using the Olympus Software program that came with your camera to store and view files...you'll probably find the photos you're looking for within that program...somewhere.

If you know what the name of a file is...you can use the search (as described above) to find these files.

Your best bet...

Open the software you use to view these photos...and try saving one of the photos to find the path to folder where the file is being saved. You can also check the options/preferences of this program to determine where this program is saving your files.Ok, somehow I did it. Is there a way to make the photos default to JPEG? They are set to Exif-JPEG. Not that it's a big deal but it would be nice to just have them set as JPEG.

QUESTION #2
Because of your wonderful posts, I learned that PC's have BLOATWARE/CRAPWARE installed. Since I am working with a brand new Hard Drive & Recovery Disks, is there tons of crapware hidding? If yes, HOW DO I KNOW WHAT TO REMOVE & WHAT NOT TO REMOVE???

THANKS!!!
DeniseJpeg and EXIF-Jpeg are compatible, I believe. the latter just has additional information stored by the camera, not alot though.Ok, that's good to know. THANKS!!

How about the crapware? This is a Sony Vaio from 2004. New Hard Drive was just installed. I have XP/IE. Here is what I do.
Go into the Add/Remove programs list. At the top right there is an option to sort by size. Look for big things that you do not use. Remove it if it is something your really don;t want. But if it is a very small program and once it awhile you might need it, ket it satay.
Ok, I will leave everything for now. I am not sure if I use the programs or not. I am good at finding stuff online but when it comes to programs, files, downloads and technical stuff....I stink!

Thanks!!
