Solve : Newbie needs HELP!!!?

Answer»

Hello, I have windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 with Service Pack 2, Asus P4P800SE MotherBoard, Intel Pentium 4  2.4GHz CPU, and 1.00 GB of RAM. Something has happened that causes everything to open very slowly, My Doucuments, My Computer, Cotrol Panel, ect, everything. My Browser (FireFox) and my internet connection work fine like always. So I went to System Restore to try and fix it, but it does not work. I GET,
     Restoration Incomplete
Your computer cannot be restored to:
              date/time
        system checkpoint
No Changes Have Been Made

None of my checkpoints work. I read alot about this and have done everything I read, it is set to automatic and started, the deactivate box is NOT CHECKED.
I finally read that I needed to go to start> run>msconfic>start up
and make sure that the boxes PCHealth and StateMgr where checked. Well what I found is that I have no PCHealth or StateMgr boxes to check. I really really DONT want to reformat my hard drive. Can someone please help me to fix this problem. I am running Webroot spy sweeper and Norton internet secuity, I have updated and run both multiple times and find nothing. Any and all help will be GREATLY apprecated, thak you in advance
DaveSystem Restore  <<<  "had you"  ever in the past prior to all this actually
create a system restore  "date" in Windows XP--  before trying to  use this procedure ?

There are check points automaticly created by system restore that I have used in the past, and yes I have created check points that I have also used, they have always worked before this problem started yesterday.rangerdaver91........ Just a tip ...........  Don't rely on the system restore feature to magically fix your machine issues.........

........ That was your first clue.........
Please do some scans and remove the source of the nasty infestation....that appears to be in residence.

I would suggest running :
ccleaner ...... http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Spybot ..... http://www.tucows.com/preview/310138
Ad-aware SE....  http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Ewido ..... http://www.ewido.net/en/
Your anti virus ...... ( run this from SAFE mode)

If the issue is still there .......
dl  ....... hijackthis .......   http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

run a scan , SAVE it and post a copy here.......

dl65  I would start with the basics first IE run chkdsk and do a defrag...see if you get any performance increase.
There's also the option of a repair install so you don't have to format and start over...
