Answer» I had a svchost.exe (dcomlaunch) problem recently. Along with this problem came no sound. At first, the speaker icon at the bottom right looked like it normally does, but I had no sound at all. Then I uninstalled Realtek audio and drivers, and tried to re-install, when I uninstalled it the speaker icon had an X on it. For some reason, under sound in the device manager, I have two "High Definition Audio Device" and one "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus". Before the LATTER read "Realtek Audio Device" I think. I've uninstalled all of these and tried to re-install using drivers from the manufacturer of the computer (Gateway) and the manufacturer of the Motherboard. Every time I try to install using a driver the procedure times out or it will say it's been installed successfully even though the speaker icon in the bottom right has an X on it still and I have no sound still.
I can only think it would be a busted sound card. What should I do to determine exactly what the problem is? Thank you.And here are my Specs.

Thanks, I tried that though. Maybe a screen shot will help. For some reason I have three options for sound in the device manager. Two of them the same even though when only the bottom one is enabled will the speaker icon next to the clock go back to normal. I still have no sound even though the computer seems to think I do.
If this is on-board sound chip, it looks like it may be busted.Quote from: Broni on December 06, 2009, 04:52:15 PMIf this is on-board sound chip, it looks like it may be busted.
I'm guessing since the card doesn't work there wouldn't be any programs to determine that a sound card is busted. If it wasn't anything else then it has to be a busted card.
On-board as in integrated into the motherboard or as in how the computer was at time of purchase?
Also, is this normal for a 6 mo. old comp, what could have caused this, and how do I prevent it from happening again?
Now I have to find a decent vista 64Bit compatible sound card for $10-30. That's going to have to wait.
All right, thanks everyone. Your help is greatly appreciated. If it's 6 months old, you can always take ADVANTAGE of warranty.Quote from: Broni on December 06, 2009, 05:03:52 PMIf it's 6 months old, you can always take advantage of warranty.
I'll look into it, thank you. Now what about my other questions?QuoteOn-board as in integrated into the motherboard or as in how the computer was at time of purchase? You'd have to open the case and take a look, if it's on-board sound chip, or separate sound card. Considering todays computers, I'd say, it's a chip.I don't mean to be a pain, but you missed these questions:
Also, is this normal for a 6 mo. old comp, what could have caused this, and how do I prevent it from happening again?
Thank you. Surely, it's not normal, but it happens. When I bought new desktop, hard drive died on me after 6 WEEKS. There is no way to prevent faulty hardware from dying.Okay, thanks. I really appreciate everyone's help. I'm glad the problem has been pinpointed, and I can start the process of getting it fixed.
