It happened to me once. make sure there isn't any question mark on your audio if you check device managerI installed drivers off the CD PROVIDED by dell and i updated them , and no there are no exclamation marks in device manager , devices are enabled problem solved it turns out the chipset driver wasn't installed correctly for some reason so i reinstalled it from Dell CD and i uninstalled all audio drivers , reboot and win Xp recognized all devices and i got my sound back. What if you don't have/lost the CD?download it from the manufacturer website
