Solve : no spyware/viruses new computer - SO SLOW?

Answer»

a bigger hhd would help.  dl Ccleaner to and run the issues scan and clean ur register up a notch or two.. make sure to back up ur register when it asks you tooeven if i uninstall everything the computer still runs slow...

i think what i'm going to do at this point is go through uninstalling everything again, defragment and clean up the hard drive as best i can manually. then see if it runs slow. ill post any results here...then i will reformat yet again to try and find out what the problem is.

do you have any suggestions or things i should take note of before i go through this process?

thanks, you guys have been helpful.how many resource demanding programs do you have?? try after to reformat or whatever installing one at a time and SEEING if you can determine which one is slowing your machine down.

if you dont reformat then make sure you go into the programs folder in your drive and make sure all of the program folder that you uninstalled are removed then defragrament.

If you do a clean install don't install Mcafee.
Use AVG & the XP firewall to start with.

Leave Adobe out of the equation as a test too.

Do you have a lot of picture files on the computer?yeah i have a ton of picture files from my digital camera...

i wont install mcafee or any other big programs. as far as resource demanding programs go, i have itunes, photoshop, frontpage, aim, aol. those are the main ones. aim is always on but even before i open any of these programs there is slowness, like i said the windows startup sound skips, so i dont think that would matter correct?

ill post my progressu need protections so get avg free like suggestedI'm sure if you turned of enough running processes/programs you would get to a stage where your computer doesn't skip.
Then you could start turning things on until you found the problem.
DL65 is about to post, let's see what he thinks.kable......  It would appear from all the info you have provided that you must either invest in a new larger hard drive or remove perhaps 10 or more gigs ( which I believe Fed has already suggested ). I also see that you have 47 applications running ........ You should try to reduce that number. Also , with XP, it requires at least 10% free space available for the system restore feature to function properly.......

dl65  Hi DL65, ltns

I'm on dialup and if I turn on Windows Automatic Update my computer becomes unresponsive for a short time at start up while Windows spins it's wheels looking for an internet connection that isn't there. Quote

LOL ....... Have you tried throwing a little sand under the wheels.....?

dl65  I would grab a DVD burner...around 50 bucks now and burn all those photos to a DVD, if that HDD fails (they all do ) you would lose all of them.
If Explorer is using thumbnail view this would explain part of the slowdown...

PATIO.  8-)thumbnail view on too...good point about the pics...would hate to lose all them.

i found that indexing service was on last night. i thought i had turned it off via services.msc but after checking properties on C: the checkbox there said it was enabled. i unchecked and it went through a whole process that took a long time.

i notice bit smoother response in the computer after:

taking off indexing service
deleting 15 gigs - now have 25ish free 46 used
NOT running defrag.

i am going to run a defrag now. would checking the box 'compress drive c: to save space" help me at all?it might give you a lil more free spaceI would SUGGEST against using disk compression...it makes certain apps go crazy and do wierd things to your data...

patio.  8-)i have uninstalled almost everything i can, except BROWSER, aim, frontpage, and cuteftp. other than that i have gone through control panel and got rid of everything. also deleted all my music files. i now have 45 gigs free and 25 used. still have the skipping problem. any other thoughts before i go through with the reformat? if i could solve the problem without reformatting it would be great but it seems that we won't be ABLE to figure it out.

i posted an update showing the processer usage, startup items etc.
