My Notepad program that comes with Windows XP is corrupted. Can somebody suggest a FIX other than Windows restore?

thanks a lotIf you are sure that Notepad.exe is "corrupted", (How do you know this) then I suspect you are in such bad trouble that you will need to reinstall Windows. It is almost certainly not the only corrupted file!
try one of the following

1. find a pc on witch notepad is working. copy c:\windows\notepad.exe to a removable media/floppy or email it to yourself, on the computer where notepad.exe was corrupt rename c:\windows\notepad.exe to something else (eg c:\windows\notepad.bak) and copy in the working notepad.exe to same path (c:\windows\)

2. do a system file check! go start -> run -> and type "sfc /scannow" without the " and HIT enter. keep a windows xp installations cd handy. restart and try open notepad again

3. search for viruses. a good antivirus i use is www.avast.com but we all have our own taste.

sfc /scannow - there is "a space" after "sfc".
As for Notepad...
Control Panel>Add\Remove>Add windows components>Accessories, if it's already checked then uncheck, exit Control Panel, go back, and put checkmark in.

What exactly does it say when you try to run notepad?
