Answer» Hello everybody. I have here a Dell d600 laptop running on win xp pro sp 1. the user CAUGHT a virus (most likely bkdr_sub7.210) and brought the machine to me. When I tryed booting the machine it brought the following error MSG:
windows could not start because the following FILE is MISSING or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Please re-install a copy of the above file
The machine is not connected to the internet for now.
I have tried using the recovery console to copy a new version of the file to its intended location (C:\windows\system32). I have run bootcfg \REBUILD and chkdsk \r.
the bootcfg\rebuild and chkdsk programs report an unspecified error on the partition which make rebuilding impossible.
Has anyone here encountered a similar problem and found a solution?
Regards BragiI have also tried booting using the last known good configuration. It gave no results. Regards BragiNTOSKRNL.EXE is missing or corrupt.I had OF COURSE tried all those things before I posted my request for assistance. Maybe I should have stated that in a clearer manner.
I have solved the problem in the worst possible way: reinstalling windows xp and thereby losing data. Luckily the user saved most of his work on a central disk.
