Answer» I'm switching from an old desktop (XP) to a new laptop (WinXP operating under Win7). I have IE 8, OE 6. I can get online OK but when I go to get in my OE 6 for my emails, it won't let me save my password; the box is greyed out. USED to be my online service (bellsouth, i.e. AT&T) would walk me through the changes, but now they won't, it's not in their 'job description'. They tell me to call Microsoft and pay. Let me restate your post. You now have Windows 7. You had Windows XP. You mail client was Outlook Express 6. You are running XP inside of Win 7. You acutely got OE6 to work? Really? And you are unhappy about not saving the password? Does this describe the problem?
Sorry I can not give you a quick exact answer. I just wanted to make sure what the issue is.
Off the top o my little head I would suggest going over to another e-mail client. One the works in Windows 7. Either: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/email OR: Top 11 Free Email Programs for WindowsI recommend Windows Live Mail (WLM) as an email client to use with Windows 7. WLM usually makes setting up email accounts very easy. Just tell WLM your email address and password and it completes the account creation with no further assistance from you. This doesn't always work but, if it does not, you can still manually set up accounts. Thanks, but the reason I want to continue using OE 6 is that I am so used to it, I have lots of important files in it, etc. A possible workaround. There are keystroke macro programs that can emulate keyboard INPUT to an application program. I do not KNOW of any the are fully compatible with Windows 7. The one I use requires me to use a hokey to give the password to an application. Still, that is better that typing in the whole password. http://www.autohotkey.com/ The link above is one of the free on es. It can give you an idea of what is possible. The ones you buy and even sense when a program wants a password. But I don't know of one I can recommend right now.
Maybe you can Google it. Keywords : Automatic keyboard Keystroke Macro Recorder AUTO Form Fill.
The Google Auto-Fill won't help, it is only for a browser. But I THIN k there are other programs out there that might work. That's the best I can offer. OE6 CAME with IE6 (Internet Explorer 6), just as OE was bundled with versions of IE preceding 6, but after IE/OE6, OE was no longer bundled with IE (versions 7/8/9). IE7 was released in Oct. 2006; so, no new versions of OE have been released since IE 6, which was released back in 2001.
You now have Windows 7 and it's time to move on to a newer email client too. Your OE messages can be imported into Windows Live Mail. Reference: Importing your e‑mail, contacts, and calendar into Windows Live Mail
