Solve : opening control panel, shuts internet explorer down.?

Answer»

I'm so glad I found this site. I hope someone can help me before I chunk my whole computer. I'm having several problems but the first one I need to resolve is this. When I click on control panel I get a MESSAGE that reads something about internet explorer shutting down. Then down it goes. Also sometimes when I open a new window and try to max the size, it disappears. I can't even pull it up from the bottom, where it shows your open WINDOWS. I have to type in the address to get it up. Any suggetions? What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?A friend did something to find if there were any virus. I'm not sure the name of the program she down loaded, but for several days it would pop up reading my trial period is over. Then they were wanting me to pay to keep it. Do you think that might be the problem? By the way, I have a HP with windows vista.tamfronmtn,

have you been having the problem before your friend loaded that new program to your computer?

Is this guy still a friend ? ?
This is a new problem it started after he ran the clean-up program. The name is something like Avast. How do i remove it if I can't open control panel? FYI, I basically only use my computer for shopping, email and loading my pictures. I only know the BASICS so when it comes to fxing something I'm clueless.tamfromtn

please download CCleaner. Then try using the uninstaller part of the progam to see if it can uninstall programs for you. Should be similar to add/remove panel of control panel, but see this link direct from the ccleaner's official website for instructions on doing it.

Do not play with the registry cleaner that comes with it, leave it alone. Good luck Quote from: 2x3i5x on March 13, 2011, 03:32:45 PM

What is it you want the OP to uninstall?Hi Allan,

OP said the following in one of the previous replies to this thread:

Was wondering if ccleaner's uninstaller panel is able to uninstall the program that the OP would like to remove (The Avast thing). It SEEMS control panel doesn't like the OP, so HOPEFULLY this may help.

However, if you got better ideas potentially more useful to OP, go for it
I see. Well, I'm not sure that's going to help with the problem, but now I understand why you suggested it
For uninstalling programs the preferred app is Revo Uninstaller. But the inability to open Control Panel without the Explorer fault is troubling.

Tammy - what do you mean "a cleanup program"? Avast is an anti virus utility. Did you mean to say that your friend ran a scan with Avast and then the problem appeared? If so, you probably have a malware issue. We can provide instructions for you if that's the case - but we need to know exactly what you are talking about. If that's now what you meant, we need to know what exactly did occur. Thanks. As far as I know, there's an AVAST Antivirus softwware and an AVAST virus cleaner tool.

Anyway ... Allan, I suppose I'll leave the rest of this help session to you, since you seem to have a handle on it.
