Solve : opening ersatz compressed files?

Answer»

In my new barebones pc, with all the bells and WHISTLES, XP and 1.5 gigs of RAM, etc., I am trying to OPEN about 20 obviously compressed files bearing an .A01 extension.  I have searched diligently and have failed to open these files with .arj or any other "universal" decompression program.  I believe they are scanned photos from some 10-20 years ago, but I have also failed to open them through changing extensions to photo files and other "zip"-like programs.  I have downloaded Stuffit and Alzip, but they have been unsuccessful, too.  Obviously, XP won't open them.  At this point, I have no idea what program created these files, even though some A01 extensions are the 3rd step in creating compressed files with arj.  I don't believe they are that type, yet, they are clearly compressed, according to both Stuffit and Alzip.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

ladlaiTry loading the files into Wordpad - SEE if the first couple of lines give any clues.  I wonder if they are the product of a splitting function... are they about 1.4MB?
