Solve : PC is slow, no virus or spyware, what is the prob??

Answer»

Hi there

A friend's PC of me is very slow. However it's a realy strong PC (3 ghz, 1 gig ram) and i'm sure the hardware is not the cause. I did a spyware and virus check and everything was clear. I think it's because he INSTALLED way the much programs and UNINSTALLED way to much programs. Does anybody has an advice to make this pc BACK faster again. The pc really start up slow, so I think i need some programs for the following probs, so if you now a good, and certainly safe one, please post it here (please DO NOT advice my to format windows, this is NO option)

Registry (now I used regcleaner & ccleaner, they were a lot of unused key's in et)
Startup programs (I used startup run to make sure a lot of programs don't start up anymore with the pc)
A lot of old folders and files which were left behind by uninstalling (I look a PROGRAM to delete them, because it takes way to much thime to look in every folder if it's an unused file)

and meaby you guys now a few programs to for making his windows faster again

thanx

blackberryHave a look at Task Manager.  What processes are running?  Are any of them consuming lots of memory/processor cycles?Try this.. restart the computer and go to the BIOS settings and look for something that says.. LOAD SETUP DEFAULTS.. and it is going to ask you are you sure and you push YES then exit try that..or try this..
Downloiad Iolo System Mechanic 6 Professional and run it after the anyliuzation run PC TOTAL CARE.. and it will do everything.. defrag mem everything.. LINK: http://iolo.com/sm/index.cfm
Let's think this through before we go changing BIOS settings on a machine that used to work fine without any alterations being made.

Let's also rethink loading on more 'Optimization' software that already has not worked.

Maksim you post some generally unhelpful ideas.   Unfortunately some people might think you know what you are talking about. As an example, defragging memory has never been proven to do anything. Lots of software has been used to attempt thiis voodoo and many people have paid a lott of money, but that does not mean it is valid.

Let's wait for the answer to Rob's question. You say the computer is "strong", but you forget that the computer can't load faster than the speed of the harddrive.blackberry......  Perhaps a defrag might help ........ or has this been done ?
How does the machine appear to work once it's fully booted up ?

UMMM Actually GX1_Man I difraged my memory and WOW my system ran faster..
P.S. have a read: http://www.abexo.com/ram-defrag.htm

Wow, and only $14.95!!!!

Show me the proof from an independant testing lab that is NOT selling something, though.

or Google for "memory defrag scam"Thanks guys for all your responds

Only common windows processess (like explorer.exe) and just antivirus (norton). But the strange thing is, processess from windows are strange. If you just open an easy thing (like notepad) the process increase and use lots and lots of memory. You might think it is because of the hardware, but it's certanly not that, because it used to be normal, with the whole same hardware.

That's a fact I can't deny. However I don't think it's because of this, like I mentioned before, it used to be a whole lot faster with the same hardware.

I wanted to do that too. But the problem is, that asks (the same problem for deleting temp files) to much from the computer, the processess increase to much, and the pc blocks... Quote

What's the size of your HDD and how many space out of that are you using?

You said it was working fine previously, so can you remember SINCE when it started running slow? And what you did to the computer/system around that time? Quote
I did a spyware and virus check and everything was clear.

Come back when the following scans show the computer is completely clean.

Online Virus Scan and Spyware Scan

did those too.... no virus/spyware foundTry safe mode, if it runs ok then you probably have a heap of crap running in the background.
Norton would be the #1 offender. In this scenario, i would test it by unplugging the current hard disk & attaching another hard disk. BY this, i would get the idea where the problem could be. I know there could be different softwares on these diff hard disks, but what if we try the second hard disk with the least software ? Quote

Another HDD would probably not boot on that machine unless the OS had been installed on that same machine...you're barking up the wrong tree here.
