Answer» So, a problem has been occuring. I can't find a test case scenario where it'll guarantee to happen but some nights when I go to shut down my computer and go to bed, it will be on the "shutting down" screen of windows 7 and it will just hang and not do anything. Sometimes (but very rarely) after a long period of waiting it will shut itself off and then reboot itself back to the login screen (even if I press shut down and not restart), or it just won't and force shutting down by holding the power button will shut it off, but then bring it back on and to that screen. Then I can shut it down by pressing the power off icon on the login screen and then it usually will work.
Last night windows had some updates, so I let it update and it updated fine, except when it was shutting down after these updates, it did it again. I restarted it to configure the updates and it was very slow but it did it. I then go to bed.
I wake up and I turn on my PC and again it's very slow. Before my login screen it waits for quite a bit on the "please wait" screen. Once I finally login, my taskbar is white/beige, kinda like how win98 used to be and this message comes up in my tray:
"Failed to connect to a windows service.
Windows could not connect to the System EVENT Notification Service service. This problem prevents standard users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond."
When I shut down while it's like this, it will clear my desktop of my icons and taskbar immediately, but it'll hang on my desktop picture being the only thing up for awhile. It must of hung for at least 3 minutes, before going and shutting down.
I'm really unsure of any fixes for it. My PC specs should be on my profile. I wasn't SURE if this was more of a hardware or an OS issue so I put here but feel free to move it if necessary.
Update: As I wrote this I was restarting it like I mentioned in the second to last paragraph. Once it finally got past the desktop, it shut down quickly. I restarted and it moved quickly to the login screen, and only hung on the welcome screen once I logged in for maybe 30-40 seconds. It then loaded up my desktop normal.
That being said, if anyone has any ideas on what the problem is, I don't want to just take this scenario as everythings alright as it's been going on for a couple weeks. If theres anything I can do, or if I should just load up my external drive and prepare for this rigs death, any advisement is surely appreciated.Try the Hotfix in the 2nd Post on this page...re-boot after.
Here...When running it, I get a dialog that says "The update is not applicable to your computer."
I chose the x64 option for the hotfix as I have a 64bit OS. What should I do?Get to this screen in Win7 and report what it says...See Here...
If this is related to an unfinished update MS has a TROUBLESHOOTING page...i'll find it.
BTW is Service Pack 1 installed ? ? ...if not DLoad a fresh copy and install it and re-boot."Performance can be improved by changing visual settings. View details."

Yes SP1 is installed. What does it state under Details Will ? ?
Which is weird cause I haven't changed anything recently and never really had a problem before.Hmmm...that leads me to believe i'm barking up the wrong tree... Did you state this started after a recent Win Update ? ? That could be the issue as well...
Let me know. Not entirely. The specific problem of it crashing on shutdown started further back. I had been trying to narrow down and find a case scenario that replicates it. For example, every time I shut down my computer, even if I close all my programs, I get that screen that says it's got things thats holding the shutdown and its trying to shut them down. It never lists any actual programs but after a few seconds it will shut down anyway. That screen has the "force shutdown" button. I've TRIED seeing if using that button or not using it made a difference. It didn't.
The problem of the extreme slowness and the funky taskbar started after it crashed shutting down after I had just let it download the updates (I hadn't rebooted yet to configure them as it crashed as it was doing so). However a few restarts later that part fixed and since then it hasn't done that. Speed is about as it was before. So that part seems to have worked itself out.
But the crashing on shutdown problem still exists.OK... In the meantime while i research if it's an update issue go to Start Menu and run Win Updates MANUALLY...you may have some incomplete ones...which will surely cause this... Also DLoad and install Startup CPL from Mike Lin and we'll have a look at your apps running in the background.Sorry for the extreme delay. Any free moment I've had has been devoted to either working on final projects for college or sleeping.
I've checked for updates. Everything is all fine, it just seems to happen.
Now I notice that if my computer starts becoming quite loud and seems like its working hard, it'll do this. Sometimes this will start before I even go to shut things down, but other times it'll be normal and then start becoming loud during the shutdown process.
When this thing actually starts working again, I'll download Startup CPL. Because right now, I'm typing this from my laptop cause the desktop is being a PoS.
