Solve : pc shuts down when i open a particular file?

Answer»

Greetings all

I am currently experiencing an odd problem with my pc, I am getting random shut downs when I try to open certain files. It first happened when i tried to open an excel file emailed to me by my colleague, there is nothing wrong with the file but when I try to open it my pc shuts down after a few seconds from loading the file.

I also get random shut downs when i watch certain videos on youtube, there is one video that i know of shuts down my pc right away but it works fine on all the other pcs.

I have check the Administrative Tools>Event Viewer but it doesnt log the shut down although i saw some logs of System Hang

Could this be a PSU problem? perhaps FAULTY capacitors on the motherboard?

i am using a moderate all in one motherboard, been using it for 2 years or so

Any help is much appreciated

TY
No...it's probably the file itself...
What leads you to believe there is nothing wrong with the file ?Quote from: ddew on February 08, 2010, 01:52:29 PM

Not likely a hardware problem. But try this. Restart in Safe mode with the VGA. You might have a problem with the video drive. Also, have you run full scans for persistent roque malware? It is possible a roue has infected the normal video driver. Or maybe a service that is not active in safe mode.
This video mentions a trojan that GETS into a driver.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltOT76epwfM1. Memory Dumps. Do the random shutdowns produce memory dump files (crash dump)? Look for "C:\Windows\Minidump" subdirectory containing files with names of format "MiniMMDDYY-nn.dmp" (e.g. Mini020610-01.dmp). Also look for "C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP".

2. Is your system configured to produce a memory dump?

To check and/or configure: Start -> right-click My_Computer -> Properties -> Advanced tab -> Settings button within "Startup and Recovery" subsection ->

a. System failure subsection:
(1) Check "Write an event to the system log"
(2) Check "Send an administrative alert"
(3) Uncheck "Automatically restart"

b. Write debugging information subsection. Select one of the following:
(1) Small memory dump (64 KB) - typical setting
(2) Kernel memory dump - will also produce small memory dump

Accept defaults for dump directory and file names. You may set "Overwrite any existing file" either way (check/uncheck).

If you've modified the settings, don't forget to select "OK" button(s) to accept on the way out.

3. System Hang Logs. I'm not familiar with these. Do the date-time-groups appear to coorelate with the random shutdowns? What do the logs say?to safe mod and open it
try test reinstall office and opent it.
thank
