Answer» Hello, again computer_commando, I downloaded opera for my husbands browser on his computer that has windows 95 as you suggested and it downloaded just fine but after download I got a windows icon instead of a SETUP icon so I can't install it. I don't know what to do. The only option I had when I was asked what TYPE to use for download was document or all files and I tried it both ways and still can't install. I'm not familiar with this because my computer uses windows 98 and I just download and install with no problem. What am I doing wrong and do I need to reset the default or something? THANKS, RondaOpera is one compressed file named "o754_3869.exe". Double-click to install. Tried that already. It opens the window that asks: what program do you want to use to open the file opera? I tried downloading spybot today and it says the same thing. It doesn't have a setup icon it has a windows icon that asks you to open with optional programs when doubled clicked. When I download programs including opera it goes to the full completed download, but always shows same icon and does same thing when double clicked. I am downloading into a file I named downloads and also tried downloading to the c: drive and still get same thing. Any suggestions? While I'm at it, what windows software do I need to update to windows 98. Windows 98 or Windows 98 SE? For an Ibm aptiva E26 :K6 233 MHz-MMX-Enhanced Processor, 32 MB SyncDRAM 64KB primary cache, 3.2 GB Hard Drive 24X-10X CD ROM Drive,K56 Flex Data/Fax Modem, ATI Rage II with Direct3D, 1 MB SyncGraphics Memory that runs windows 95. Thought I'd just tell you all the features so I wouldn't leave out anything. I'm having problems with script errors and pop ups saying This computer has performed an illegal operation. Would you just update to 98 or is there another solution? Thanks for all your help Computer_Commando.I think, your Win95 is not working properly because it's missing something called Windows Installer. Your IBM should be able to run Win98SE. 32MB is a little low, 64MB would be better. If you are planning on install Win98SE, get all the drivers from IBM, in advance. If you can upgrade memory to 128MB, you could even install Win2k. Windows Installer for Win9x: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=F1B7A5B0-611B-45A7-A06D-CADFF33E64DA Thank you computer_commando. We will download the installer and go from there. Should this solve both problems: the downloading of programs not working and the problem with script errors and illegal operation? Thanks Ronda Quote ...the problem with script errors and illegal operation?... Maybe Opera will fix it. Many websites don't support early versions of IE and Netscape. Thank you. I will try downloading the windows installer, hopefully it will work. Then maybe I can finally get opera downloaded right. I will probably be back for help. Thanks a lot. RondaNo guarantees that Windows Installer will work; it's still the only thing I can think of. Let us know how it works out. Win98SE is quite an improvement over Win95. But Win2k-Pro is my preferred OS. I used an earlier version of Opera; don't know anything about it now. Many are using Mozilla, which is really Netscape. It didn't say specifically, if it supported Win95. Quote Many are using Mozilla, which is really Netscape. Though both are built on the Gecko engine and function SIMILARLY, Mozilla is definitely NOT Netscape. AOL put some garbage in Netscape that is not in Mozilla. Mozilla is the preferred browser. And you know whats really weird? I can't access Netscape web mail with Mozilla. Quote Though both are built on the Gecko engine and function similarly, Mozilla is definitely NOT Netscape. You can't access Netscape webmail from Mozilla? You said it, "Mozilla is definitely NOT Netscape". what is the estimated time on 1460 KB? I did'nt see it on the site you gave me, I need to know if this is going to take all night, because if so I will do it overnight so I can do my other internet business on this computer. Only have one phone line. Thanks RondaScratch that last question. The installation WENT well and Opera is running great. Thanks so much for your help computer_commando and everyone else. I think we are still going to get Windows 98SE and upgrade for a faster connection instead of keeping 95. Opera is good for 30 days I believe before you have to buy. Anyway thanks again. Until next time, Ronda |
