Call the fire department.  Well, I have to say that the OP's username really matches his problem...

But anyways... have you scanned your computer lately? Try getting Windows Media Player 11 (if it's compatible with W98)Did you uninstall / defragment / reinstall...or just reinstalll?

PERHAPS his first name is Richard, or an abbreviation thereof...

Judging by the other issues you have mentioned i think nothing short of a repair of Win98 will get you out of this...
Post back if you need help...there are methods where you won't lose your data...So where does the issue of your computer catching on fire come in? Was it just to get extra special attention...

Anyways:

Go to Start>Control Panel
Double-click "Add/Remove Programs"
Click the "Windows Components" tab
Find the Windows Media Player (Under Multimedia, I think), de-select it, click Apply, and wait, restart your computer, and install it again.

What exactly did you remove?
Removing Windows Media Player ONLY should not affect your volume settings. Unless you removed the Volume Control. Go back to Windows Components, and install all the Multimedia stuff. Quote from: Dark Blade on July 15, 2007, 06:51:02 PM

Actually, the highest you can go on any Windows OS before XP is WMP9.To reinstall Win98 without losing your data and programs you need to rename the win.com file located in the root of C: to win.old and then boot with the Win98 CD and install normally...
This method is not completely foolproof but i've done it successfully many times...if you have data you absolutely need then back it up first.Patio::
I did what you said and things are alot better.
However I am still experiencing a few problems::

1.
First of all a black screen ALWAYS comes up and lists these error codes:
"vnetsup.vxd"
"vredir.vxd"
"dfs.vxd"
I press enter to get through them , then windows opens...

2.
A message window appears with this message::
"Cannot find the specified file. Some or all of the following feature is missing:
Microsoft Network"
 I click out of that...

3.
Another message window appears:
"there is a problem with DISPLAY settings. the current adapter type is incorrect
or current settings do not work with your hardware"
(and the display is in low resolution and color by the way, this whole time.)
 Next:
        -I go to display.
        -I try to change it to 256 colors, and 1024 x 768
-It wont let me but makes me reboot.
-I repeat 1, 2 and 3 again but this time it lets me
      change to 256 and 1024 X 768
        - Then I have to restart AGAIN and I go through 1 and 2 again
After all of this I can then go about browsing the web, etc.

What the *censored* i s wrong with this thing?
I updated windows 98  after I did what u said.
I do have 2 yellow exclamations under device manager:
           1. PCI Comunication Device
           2. PCI Mass Storage Controller
I also reinstalled my audio and graphics driver with no problems.

*I still cant get Windows Media Player to work. And I cant uninstall it then reinstall BECAUSE It isnt listed under add/remove OR multimedia(it isnt seperate).
 * I installed IE6 but I am still having problems with some websites. Most importantly to me: my GMAIL account. The inbox area is blank and I have to go to a HTML version of the site to view my mail...

Could someone please give me some advice on some or all of these issues. Like, step by step what I can do to make all this stop???Sounds to me like you have the wrong video drivers installed...DLoad and run AIDA32 and REPORT back what video device you have.i have
   nVIDIA RIVA TNT2
I looked under the driver properties and it lists driver files from in the windows folder:
      C:\WINDOWS.000\SYSTEM\NVDISP.DRV
             C:\WINDOWS.000\SYSTEM\NVMINI.VXD
                     C:\WINDOWS.000\SYSTEM\vmm32.vxd (vdd.vxd)

I Downloaded driver file called "TNTW9XE.exe" and I tried to apply that as the driver but it didnt work...Is that driver from the manuf. site ? ?
You may need to un-install the old one first.
