Solve : Primary Disk Not Found??

Answer»

Don't know what exactly happened, it was working fine then it rebooted itself and when it came back up, it had the black screen saying "Primary Disk Not found" press F2 for SET up. What can I do? Is there anything I can try? (ie: in the set up) I am using XP by the way. Thanks in advance. What exactly were you doing when this happened?

It may be just a jumper setting on the hard drive, but if it was working, we can PROBABLY rule this out.

It may be a loose IDE cable...or a BIOS setting.

How old is your computer?  A dying CMOS battery has been known to cause this as well.

Worse case scenario...your hard drive TOOK a dump!

Get back to us on this...with a little more detail as to what you were doing at the time and if there were any recent hardware or software changes.Well I wasn't doing anything special. I just had it on and was watching TV. I turned to look at it and it said beginning dump of physical memory and rebooted itself, when it came back up it was the black screen with the message "Primary Disk Not Found". The laptop is a few years old but I had no problems at all before. What is the make and model of your laptop?

First thing I'd try is to TURN off your laptop and unplug it from its electrical source.  Next...remove the battery from the laptop.

Hopefully, you know where the hard drive is on your laptop.  Remove the hard drive...then reinsert it...making sure it has seated properly.

Reinstall the battery and reboot your laptop to see if it boots into Windows.  If it does...make sure your programs function and update your malware protecetion as well as visiting Windows Update for high-priority updates.

Also...while you have the hard drive out...check the manufacturer and model.  Go to their website and find a DIAGNOSTICS program to download so you can check the integrity of the hard drive.

Post back with your results...I've seen this on an ASUS motherboard before.  The IDE controller took a dump and had to be replaced...during tax season no less
