Solve : Problem after Upgrading my Desk-Top PC?

Answer»

I recently got my PC upgraded. Motherboard G-41 Chipset, CPU Intel Dual Core 3.0 Ghz, and RAM 2GB DDR3 have been now installed. The engineer loaded Windows XP Professional on it. I have with me a GENUINE Windows Home & Student edition CD;I wanted him to install my Windows CD. But the engineer told me that this can't be DONE.
Will somebody please tell me whether I can install my original genuine Windows Cd on my PC now ?
If yes, please guide me step-by-step please ! How to delete the Windows XP Professional OS ?There is no "Windows Home and Student Edition". Many thanks .What's the problem? Professional is better than Home Edition in every way other than cost. Do you not have a license for Professional? Is it complaining at you for not having a genuine license or SOMETHING?Yes. Professional is a superset of the features in home. All you would be doing by installing Home Edition would be to essentially downgrade your Operating System, and of course waste your own time. Many thanks to BC_Programmer MASTERMIND FOR HELPING ME.
I am afraid, the engineer has installed an OS Windows XP Professional which was easily and quickly available to him , but I doubt whether it is genuine ; he has not given me the "key" to this OS. So, it will not get automatically updated as and when new updates are released. This is, I think, a big disadvantage in retaining this freshly installed Windows XP Professional OS.

Therefore, if possible, I should uninstall it and install my GENUINE Windows XP Home edition . Is my idea correct ? I am 80 years old and need my PC for emails and browsing only.

Please advise me as to what I should do in these circumstances . If I should uninstall the present OS and install my GENUINE Windows XP Home edition then will you please guide me as to how I may uninstall the XP Professional OS and install my GENUINE XP HOME EDITION ; if you can, please guide me step by step, please .

Thanks to you again.
A QUICK Google search came up with this

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/install-reinstall-uninstallCan't you update? If not then yes, you were right in thinking it would be a good idea to install Home Edition and use your genuine license, provided you still have the product key for it.

You won't miss out on much putting Home Edition on there, not for browsing and emailing, and you certainly want to be able to keep your PC updated.

The engineer should have put Home Edition on there in the first place, really; I can't SEE why it won't run on your upgraded system, Home Edition meets the same requirements that Professional meets so if Professional runs then Home Edition will run.Dear Sir

A couple of questions to understand what may have happened.

Was the old computer running XP home. ?
After the Upgrade did you get the computer back with XP pro and all your settings, programs and data on the computer as it was before but with XPpro. ?

UNFORTUNATELY now it has pro if you want to install xp home you will have to delete the hard drive and load a fresh copy.

There is a very handy tool in windows if you do need to do this called File & Settings transfer wizard.

Before giving anymore advice perhaps if i get the answers to the above.
Also did they give you your old hard drive back ?

A technician should have known how to swap your windows etc to another computer without reloading windows.

Sorry if this wasn't the case

Lisa
