dl65  I tryed that, and it didnt work, but I got a little anxious, and went to "File Types".

I clicked 'File Folder', and hit the advanced button, and "Open" wasnt an option, so I added it, put explorer.exe as the program to use, and set it to default. I applied the settings, and now I can double click folders, but they all open in a new window. .. help? Quote

Hi, just to confirm. Is it you ONLY encounter this problem when opening folders (but not others like HTM, media etc. files)?

Try to add "open" to the file folder. See if this can solve your problems.I did add "Open" to the file folder menu. Now it opens a new window with each double click, which is better, but not normal.

It just happens with windows explorer, not IE or anything else.I suggest af urther look into the hardware settings in Control Panel : are you using the same mouse as always, or have you added a new one?  Is there only one mouse in your profile?   If you have a mouse that did not come with the sytem, such as a track ball, have you loaded the drivers?  Does your driver offer customization of the various buttons?  Am curious to see how this works out.....What kind of 'search' Window does it open? The search window looks like I clicked "Start>Search".

But that stopped now, now it just opens a new window..

I havent been on it in a couple days, so I still have to try that Folder Options thing.

I really appreciate the help you're all giving me, it means alot. What have you done before this problem occured? Is the computer operated by other users?
You need to edit the registry because the one in "folder options" doesn't let you to look the function in details (The "Edit" button is greyed out).

First try to delete the "open" option. Then restart. Try to add "open" again, see if it works.

If not, you need to edit registry.
Warning: Incorrectly modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Do it at your own risk.

If you don't wish to edit registry yourself, I can send you a *.reg which can help you to modify it. Leave your email ADDRESS if you wish to get.

Open in the same window
Step 1:
- Open registry by "Start | Run | Type "regedt32"
- In "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Directory\shell", add:
…\SameWindow
- Double click "Default", type the name(description) of the new function (eg "Open in the same window")

Step 2:
- In "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Directory\shell\NewWindow, add:
…\Command
- Double click "default", type "explorer.exe"

Step 3
- Go to "Window Explorer| Tools | Folder Options | File Types | File Folder"
Select "Open in the same window" as default.

Then you should be able to double-click and open in the same folder.
Hope it helps.
