Solve : Problem with "search"function?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP

There is an icon on the start page that has a magnifying glass and the word "Search" on itl

When I used to click on this icon, I got a search window that offered several different search options and there was a little dog wagging his tail while the search was in progrress.

Now, all I get when I click on the icon is the dog and  a blank dark blue background, with no way for me to begin a search.

Can someone PLEASE HELP me?

Thanks,
George ZissisGeorge Zissis.......When did this start ? Have you had any viruses or spyware attachs recently ? Have you made any changes to any of your settings ?
You say you are using Xp .........have you installed all of the available updates ?

dl65  I first noticed this ttwo days ago when I went to the search function, which I rarely do.
I may have inadvertently made some changtes.  I am having problems with Internet Explorer, so I have fooled around with changes to that program.
I always install microsoft updates immediately upon notification.
Hope this helps you.Do you think I should go to the microsoft website and see f I can load currentl updates?do you have any p2p programs like bearshare??and you state you have had problems with ie6>>TRY an online scan>>http://housecall.trendmicro.com/What is the name of that animated search bar with the doggy wagging it's tail? Do you need that tool?

I would erase those kind of animated tools because usually there is spyware within and second it messes up your programs (Bonzi Buddy for e.g.)

Can you uninstall that program from your Add/Remove programs list in the control panel?Burton, thanks for your help.  The problem is not with a search bar, rather it  is the search tool which is a part of Microsoft Windows.  The search icon is found on the Start Menu.  This replaces the "Find" function of previous windows releases.   Do you know what I'm trying to DESCRIBE here? Is this the problem?: http://www.dougknox.com/images/xp_search_error.jpg

Then you could try http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=9D1F0B73-259A-4A1B-93A4-F02C21BCB15AGzissis, you haven't said if you've scanned for viruses? Also what changes did you make when you fooled around with your system? Have you tried a system retstore?

Burton, that dog is the Windows built in search feature. It's annoying and a waste of memory in my opinion. It can be turned off but not uninstalled. The Win 98 search feature is better in my opinion. You don't have to answer a millions searh wizard questions, just straight to the point. If it isn't broke don't fix it...Hi Burton,
I followed your suggestion and clicked on the microsoft download link that you provided.

This link required me to go through a Windows Validation process.

I went through the process, was provided with a passcode, and downloaded the application.

However, when I ran the application, all I got was a dialog box with the heading "Genuine Windows Hypertext Application".

The box was empty and I have no idea as to what to do next.

Can you go through the process to see if you get a different result?

Thanks for your help.

George ZissisNeil,
My virus scans are up to date.
I' feel stupid because I can't remember what the changes were.  I believe they were I.E. related.

Is there another way that I can do file searches in XP without using that icon on the start menu?

Also, how do I restore?   I did it once a long time ago, but don't remember the sequence.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378  or reboot pc and hold down the f8 key and chose last good CONFIG...i would still run a virus scan!Sorry I dont have time to go through the installation process as explained above, but I can inform you on the restore of a previous WinXP system backup.

Go to Start - Run and type 'msconfig', then bottom button ('start system restore' or similar) and then select top option to choose a last system restore by date (or 3rd option for last system restore if no check points available there)
