Answer» Hello
Could someone give me a quick explanation of what the Windows Installation Repair does? (You know, you insert your Windows disk, and press "R" for Repair...)
I would SUSPECT it just re-copies all the Windows files, thus deleting your driver SETTINGS, desktop settings, etc, but keeping your files (but leaving most EVERYTHING out of place with a registry reset)A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied.
Thanks Contrex (Now I know what it is before I recommends it) You need to do it with no internet connection, and if the disk you are using is an original XP disk, ie non slipstreamed, you should apply SP2 (which includes SP1) before connecting to the Internet, and get all the SECURITY updates as a matter of urgency.
