What files?

Do you have an XP CD?

If so, place it in your CD ROM drive and follow the instructions below:
  • Click on Start > Run and type sfc /scannow then press Enter (note the space between scf and /scannow)
    • Let this run undisturbed until the window with the blue progress bar goes away
SFC - Which stands for System File Checker, retrieves the CORRECT version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the INCORRECT file.

The black screen with xp logo and the scrolling blue progress bar has no "Start" menu or "Run" command.

I can only get a start menu from safe mode. When I try the command from safe mode a command box flashes one time then vanishes. I can do this several times and the result is the same.

I can boot from CD. When I do this I get a blue screen that says Windows Setup in the upper left. Then there's a page that says:

Welcome to Setup. This portion of the the Setup program PREPARES Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer.

To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

When I try the command in the Recovery Console, I get "The command is not recognized."I'm going to move this to the Windows forum so others will see it and give some suggestions.Moved to the Microsoft Windows forum.Try Windows repair: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmNot SURE were I'm coming into this thread, but ..if you can get to Safe Mode why not give system restore a try?Good point.
