Answer»

can i record cable tv on my pc and if so how do i do it and what do i need? You need a TV card. This is not the same as a videocard.

I do not know if you can record TV shows USING the default software, though.Doesn't he need A TV Tuner?  And some software? Quote

TV Tuner Card. TV Card.

Perhaps software will be delivered with the TV card, perhaps it won't. He will have to keep his eyes out when buying one.

Bruce also may need prior written PERMISSION from the specific cable network before he may record the broadcasts.

People aren't strangers to bootlegging anymore.  If I tape "New Yankee Workshop" while I'm gone to church, is that bootlegging? Isn't this the whole idea behind VCR's and DVD recorders? For the size and formats currently available i would say recording any video to a HDD isn't very cost effective.

Good point, S-Dave.

I was just THINKING about that notification i hear when i watch any professional sports BROADCAST about needing permission.  The law may require that such recorded shows be deleted after they are viewed.  However, i'm not a lawyer and am not the one to ask for legal advice.
