Solve : Registry Cleaners and Glary Utilities --? |
|
Answer» Advanced Windows Care is good. Before using any program that does anything with your registry: backup your files, create a system restore, and read many REVIEWS of the software.I recommend using Erunt to BACK up the registry as well as System Restore. YOU NEED HAVE NO FEAR OF THEM.The first statement is simply dangerous. An average user has no business in using registry cleaners. In 99% cases, using registry cleaner will NOT visibly improve computer performance. The only cases where registry is needed, are those of botched uninstalls, or computer infection.I agree with this wholeheartedly...I don't know how to reply to this without re-quoting 50% of what I wrote in my first message. The registry operates according to rules of strict logic. And so do registry cleaners. The software writers have come to the astonishing conclusion that if the registry says *.dll can be run by INITIALISING *.dll, and no such file exists in any directory, then the registry entry is probably useless (gasp!). Or if it says the song "I love you baby" is track 3 on the cd in the cd player, and the cd player is empty, then that entry can be safely deleted too (shock! horror!). Seriously though, where problems are identified as the result of registry cleaning, most fall into two categories. (1) Bugs in the registry cleaning program. All software has bugs, at least in the development stages. Refer to my original COMMENTS re use of well-tested, name-brand products. I don't want to quote it all again. (2) Incompetently-written applications (other than cleaners) generating registry entries of questionable legitimacy. For obvious reasons, these are often freeware or shareware. A professional-grade registry cleaner, having been developed to much higher standards, correctly identifies these values as toxic and deletes them, possibly causing the GUILTY program to fail. Whatever, the golden rule of backing up is this: ALWAYS do it, and do it often, while things are running well. NEVER do it when things are going wrong (that's why backing up according to a fixed schedule is usually not the best option - but that's a whole different story!). Every registry cleaner I know offers this option on a plate.Alan What's your computer background?
