Solve : Registry failure...?

Answer»

I was using win2k (sp4) and one fine day following error appeared while starting the pc:

<STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannotload the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Same error KEEPS on showing, even I start in 'safe mode' or in 'last good...', So I used another HDD with winxp and started the pc. Fitted the HDD with win2k as a slave and now I can access all the files from it.

I believe, there is always a backup of the registry file and not sure where to find it. Please help me to restore the registry, so that I can start my pc using the win2k operating system. I've checked both HDD by scandisk and no bad sector was found.

My pc is P4 2.8ghz HT, nvidia FX5200 AGP, 768MB ram. I was using AVG free antivirus, zone alarm firewall...

Help please...

The contents of the %systemroot%\System32\REPAIR folder are usually updated when you create or update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD), which also contains backup copies of parts of your registry.

Win2K does not automatically backup the registry unless you use an add-on utility such as ERUNT...
The one backup you have may get you out of trouble here though...Unable to find the folder WINNT\System32\REPAIR on the HDD which has win2k OS.

Any other hope...

jawanda56 How about C:\WINNT\repair ? ?Yes, I've located this folder in drive H:\WINNT\repair, of size 7.34mb. Its contents are :

autoexec.nt 1kb
config.nt 3kb
default 120kb
ntuser.dat 120kb
sam 16kb
secsetup.ini 511kb
security 16kb
setup.txt 137kb
software 5708kb
system 896kb

I also strongly recommend:

1. Install Recovery Console, if it's not installed, yet.

2. Install Erunt, which works like XP\Vista System Restore (or even better). I use it on all of my Windows versions.

Thanks Broni for the valuable links. I'll go through them and post the steps done and results.

jawanda56 Cool Sorry, I kept you waiting...

Studied the articles suggested by Broni.
I'd win2k CD, which is not bootable. As per the procedure written in the instructions for set up, made 4 setup disk FLOPPIES. Booted the pc on these floppies to start the win2k set up process. Selected the repair option.

Now my win2k operating system is starting normal. Everything in the PC is as before. No loss of any data or any program.

Thanks for the help...

Good to hear you are fixed up...Nice Work by Broni !
You're Win2K should be bootable however...does it say Microsoft all over it ? ?Good job!
Did you install 1, and 2? Quote from: patio on April 11, 2008, 11:20:58 AM
Win2K should be bootable.
Perhaps my boot sequence in BIOS is WRONG.

That would do it alright...
Install those things as soon, as possible, They're crucial.
