Answer» What is Remote Desktop in XP for??From the mothership: Remote Desktop Connection: frequently asked questionsthis is what I thought thanks. wen I go into DOS and type ipconfig Yes and no. It's the IP address of your computer, but more than likely it's a "PRIVATE" IP address known only within your Local Area Network (LAN). Most LANs use private IP addresses. When they communicate to and from the internet, the private address is translated at a gateway router to the "public" IP address of its Wide Area Network (WAN) interface using Network Address Translation (NAT). From the internet's point of view, they are communicating with the "node" at the WAN address (public IP address). This accomplishes two things: o It conserves the dwindling number of public IP addresses. o It shields your computer from the public (internet). To see the "public" IP address that you send and/or receive from, enter "www.whatismyip.com" into the address field of a web browser. 2.
