--Marked as Resolved in result of being solved and locked. -ZylstraYou need to post alot more info on your current dilemna, machine specs, OS and what happened prior to this to get relevant responses...Do you have any data you need off of it? If so don't touch it. Use another computer to find a solution. Also, give us more info so we can know how to help.2048Mb RAM, 3200 Mhz AMD Athlon, Asus A8N-SLI, HD's all WDG 250Gn 7200rpm, Hd-1: C:\ 60Gb VISIBLE with W2K and part. P:\190Gb (the one I dont see...with XP) D:\ and F:\ only musicfiles(MP3)...
Trouble started with IE7. which I had imported/installed separately and wanted to remove again after which the old 6.0 would re-appear (in all normal cases but mine)...a short very short message came on the screen after restart (I couldnt read it but it started with Internet Explorer .......) and then XP logged itself off....restarting didnt help because when choosing XP, I saw that the startpic of W2K appeared for a sec and then the screen became blck, heard my scanner start, but that was it....looking at My PC I could see C:\ D:\ F:\ A:\ and of course E:\ which is my dual dvd burner...
Starting in the different modes it really didnt help.....going cmd and trying to find the DIR of P:? Nope
Hpe this is info enough? I seemed to have repaired the W2K which had some MINOR problems too, but strangely enough W2K always repaired itself when having some restarts (maybe it's my imigination)....AVG antivirus and antispyware said no infections....spybot said no problems to fix......have Sygate FIREWALL and disconnected XP's Firewall....no need to have one good one and a swiss cheese together...
The XP I installed is a student one but has an official studentkey and worked nicely without any problems (goes smoothly through all validationsprocesses...lol..)until I was so stupid to try out IE70...
On that invisible P:\ are lots of newly found music, important docs and of course my last backup sucked...hahahahahahaha
I have though a great RecoverMyFiles software just in case NOTHING else works...although I doubt if it can find the invisible Uncle Billy's storage...please help...
When having looked for a last time at My PC after restart it comes up with HD G:\ (probably as a kind of replacement for P:\?) but that one is only visible and doesnt show any info...Now Uncle Billy made me both happy and confused. After I saved W2K I needed to update the whole chebang (75 updates...lol) and after that restart, that was ok...but...before going to the opening concert for W2K it stopped and showed chkdsk G: (volumename P:)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and then started the longest repairseance I have ever seen.......looked a bit like the horrorpics you get when you have a trojan that slowly but gradually VISIBLE drops all your files to the floor....but it continued for about 15 minutes rolling over the screen and than it said, everything is fixed, repaired, restored etc etc, I couldnt believe my own eyes when having a look on MyPC seeing G:\ which I reported in the last info full of all my stuff again...music and all.....it still didnt want to play with WindowsMediaPlayer but it did with VLCplayer, our dearest hooker of music...lol...
So, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, G:\ said: I'M BACK!!!!!!!!!
But I still cant boot XP on G:\......so the question now is how do I accomplish that with your help?!! It's a doubleboot as told, 1. W2K Pro and 2. XP but 2 doesnt work...(anymore?)
Proud about my good old W2K, build 2095 one of the first in Norway...lol....and he did it again.....unbelievable, now trying to listen to you guys for the bootproblem........but I'm breathing again...
When trying to play music the WMP says: OS cant run %1. but of course VLC does play...and MS doesnt have a solution for the error...!!!Quote from: Peterwolfe on June 05, 2007, 06:42:49 AM But I still cant boot XP on G:\......
Use your Windows XP CD to repair your installation. Restart your computer with the CD in the drive and let the CD boot. There's a couple ways to do repair. Manually and automatically. I'm not always sure which option is manual, so if you get a command line, try again. nope, did not work......it even made G:\ invisible again after restart!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i thought xp had to be on the c drivewell it is, in a way, main OS = still W2K on C:\, but i partitioned C:\ in C:\ and, well, originally I calles the other partitionP but it became G: before it became invisible again.....so I started with the XP disc in the machine hoping it would grab the boot, but it didnt and in addition the chkdsk afterwards made probebly the G:\ invisible again...lol.. you can install it on any drive, but it will still put a few bytes on the first drive for booting purposes. Quote from: unlovedwarrior on June 05, 2007, 11:02:40 AMi thought xp had to be on the c drive
In 2001, when I had Windows 98SE on my C: drive, Windows XP came out, and I put it on my D: drive and had a dual boot system for a while. When I decided to ditch Windows 98 I deleted everything off my C drive and used it for storage. I changed boot.ini to suit. Everything was fine with XP on the D: drive except for a very few program installers, whose writers obviously also assumed that everybody runs Windows on a c: drive. ok just making sureSo neither windows installation will read the partition but there are files still on it that you need? Right? Ummm... check out your computer management screen by right clicking "My Computer" and clicking on "Manage" From there, go to disk management. A text and graphical display will open on the right and show you what your hard drive set up looks like. (You may want to maximize the screen.) You should be able to see the status of your partitions and if there are any errors. Let me know what it looks like and if there are any errors or dissimilarities. Are all of your partitions and drives showing up?Put in your XP CD. Power down and re-boot. From the first menu choose "R" for the recovery console. When it loads type in "fixboot" without the quotes and hit Enter. Open the CDRom and remove the XP CD.
Power down and re-boot.
If this worked your dual-boot menu with Win2K and XP as OS choices will be there.
If this didn't work try the same steps above except type in "fixmbr" without the quotes and hit Enter...
Good Luck to you.problem solved, the guys in the shop just formatted my disc after they found it and installed W2K, clean...lol... but all of you thanks for the assistance
