Solve : restart again?

Answer»

when I POWER my System, I see a message on the monitor "the previous attempt to restart from previous location failed, attempt to restart again?" I have tried to restart again but the massage persistWhat is new or different since the last time everything worked PROPERLY (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

As soon as you power on the system begin tapping the F8 (function) key. That should take you to a boot option screen. Try "last known good configuration". If that doesn't work try safe mode.thanks allan
i tried using the F8 key but It didn't work

It may be worth noting that not all computers use F8. Gateways, for example, use F5. And I believe Dells use Delete. In addition to Allan's question, what type of PC do you have?Quote from: CBMatt on December 07, 2010, 06:58:02 AM

No, Dell is F8. I have a bunch of them.Quote from: CBMatt on December 07, 2010, 06:58:02 AM

They ALL use F8. We're talking about the windows boot option screen, not the one provided by the BIOS to select a boot medium. (thus the "Last Known Good Configuration" option). Now if we wanted to guide them in displaying their computer-specific Boot media selection option we'd need to know their model number, as the varous models do indeed have different keys to access that option screen.Quote from: Allan on December 07, 2010, 07:02:30 AM

Hmm, not sure which brand it is then. I know I've run into it a few times, though.

I'm talking about the exact same option screen. I've got three Gateways at my house and they all use F5. F8 does absolutely nothing on these computers during the boot process. As a result, I had this computer for about two months before I finally figured out how to get into the boot options (I thought my timing was somehow off).Quote from: CBMatt on December 08, 2010, 06:36:42 AM

That's really interesting.... first time I've heard that. Like BC I thought this was an OS specific option, not a hardware specific option. Thought F5 WOULD usually take you to safe mode.Quote from: Allan on December 08, 2010, 06:41:53 AM

The keyboard scan-code is quite literally hard-coded into NTLDR. Although hardware manufacturers modifying the boot loader would not surprise me, either.

It might be relevant to note that the message "the previous attempt to restart from previous location failed" Is when a XP machine fails to resume from hibernation.

I assume the OP forgot the rather important details of the menu that appears as part of this message; either "Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu " or "continue to system restart". The former option can be chosen to delete hiberfil.sys and continue booting.Quote from: Allan on December 08, 2010, 06:41:53 AM

F5 normally does do that, but on all three of these computers, it goes to the boot options. As far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be a key that goes directly to Safe Mode...at least not on my desktop. I haven't tested every function key on the laptops.

I never thought much of it and have always assumed it was some sort of Gateway feature, but I just checked their support pages and I currently can't find anything that supports my personal experiences. Makes this sound like an isolated incident, but these are three different Gateway models, one of which was just given to me recently. I'll look into it further once I've had some sleep.Quote from: CBMatt on December 08, 2010, 06:57:51 AM

F5 and F8 both bring you to the options screen; However, in Windows 9x it would take you directly through to safe mode.

Actually, the F5 and F8 options even then were standby's from DOS 5 and 6; F8 would prompt you for each command in config.sys and autoexec.bat, and F5 would skip them entirely during boot. With NT4 and earlier you had to use spacebar during boot to bring up the last known good/advanced options menu; Windows 2000 changed it to fall more in line with the consumer OS's.

So, really, you can use either F8 or F5, sine they both bring you to the boot options menu.
