Solve : Restoring XP Registry Point, what are possible dangers??

Answer»

So XP has "System Restore" that allows me to go back in time and use a copy of the registry from a previous point in the past. Any downside or possible issues to this? Seems easy enough right?

Thanks,

ScottWelcome to the CH forums.

System Restore has the reputation of not working when it's really needed. I have experienced a few (less than 5) occasions when the Restore Points created automatically could not be USED, only those created manually would perform. Not only does System Restore restore the XP registry, it restores many system files. My PREFERENCE is to have System Restore disabled, others will have other preferences.

If you are only concerned with Registry Backup and restore I recommend the Erunt utility which, in my case, runs automatically on the first boot of each day allowing registry restore to that time if necessary.

From my experiences, System Restore has been very helpful. However, it can be a little annoying.
For example, I remember restoring to a point a few days back and some of my work on the computer had been moved to the desktop because the folder I put them in hadn't been created yet.
Start menu Shortcuts may be deleted as well. Stuff like that but I have NEVER lost any files that couldn't be replaced. Some installed programs may be lost. For instance...if you use System Restore to roll back to last Wednesday, any programs you've installed since then will have to be reinstalled. Also, many files that you have deleted since then will return (this is how viruses are able to return via System Restore). As for personal files, they should be left alone. In my experience, it has been very rare for anything of MINE to be deleted, and even if it is, it can be retrieved. Certain files that you have moved may be returned to their original locations or you may experience something like what Carbon described. So, with that said...there's a chance of some of your DATA being moved around, but for the most part, using System Restore is safe.Obviously, System Restore is very useful feature.
Remember Win 98, without it?
But, I prefer ERUNT, as Dusty does. I have it running on all installation. It saved me, where System Restore failed.
