Solve : Returning laptop to "out of the box" status?

Answer»

How do I return my "Mpc Transport T2300" back to its original configuration and retain Windows XP Pros' status as the OS? What can I do to "clear all ghost information" and not have to PURCHASE a CD for a new install.... I purchased this laptop used and without an install cd from a computer repair store and they are no longer in business. IS THERE A PARTITION ON THE HDD THAT HARBOURS A REPLACEMENT/ RESTORE OF THE OS?.........if so, how or what do I do to access that partition? Thanks, Lee1. Bad News. Apparently the manufacturer, MPC Computers, also went out of business. See this MPC Transport Notebook forum thread.

2. Restore Partition. I've seen no reference to a "restore" partition on this laptop, but you could try using F11 when you are rebooting and see if any system recovery/restore options are available. It appears that you reinstall the operating system from separate Windows XP PROFESSIONAL Recovery and Driver CDs.

3. Good News. Apparently a group of people gathered together and got permission to rehost the MPC support site. See MPC Technical Support.

5. Best Help. Suggest you visit the MPC Tech Support Forums and "post" to the MPC Transport Notebooks category. I'm assuming they would know the most about your notebook and any available resources that are still available.Thank You so much! I am at my wits end with this! I will try f11 and see! I tried f2....bios, and f12...to no avail?!?! Thanks so much for your reply and your help! It's been a good experience to use that web site for the post I needed answered! Lee JThank me after it's all said and done. You have a lot of research and work ahead of you because your computer is no longer supported by the manufacturer.

I think you will need to reinstall from CDs. You'll have to reinstall both the operating system and drivers. You may be able to download drivers from third party MPC Tech Support site mentioned in previous post.

You'll need to either "find" your Windows XP Pro "Product Key" or recover it from the hard drive. The NirSoft utility ProduKey may be used to recover the product key from an operational or nonoperational system as long as the file system is readable.

You'll also need to know whether the product key is for an "OEM" or "Retail" installation. This is INDICATED in the "Product ID" which Nirsoft utility will also report. Not sure if keys are different for retail "Full" or "Upgrade" CDs.

You haven't said whether the current operating system installation is operational or why you want to revert back to its original configuration.

If it's operational, you should backup all drivers currently in the system to avoid having to find them later. Not too familiar with that step as I've never done it, but there are "free" programs for this that someone could recommend.

If it's operational, there's also a STANDARD Microsoft utility, System File Checker (sfc), on your system to check for and replace missing or corrupt system files. Normally you would need your Windows XP Install CD to support this, but if operating system was pre-installed by manufacturer it may be setup to avoid this. If necessary, it may be possible to modify Windows registry to look for the original installation and service pack update files on the hard drive, thus avoiding need for CD. No guarantee on that, however.

I apologize for the lack of pertinent infrmation! The system is very opperable and works great! I need to prep the comp for re-sale on craigs list. hence the reason for wiping the drive or re-install of OS I just don't have the CD for that.

That should be my first step then to get the drivers backed up.

This is where I'll be a bit lost in this process, I have a little experience with computers but this level of tech'in is grey to me.

The system may be an upgrade and installed by the store/ retailers business, it's also a Computer repair shop. They dealt with alot of "after market" systems, purchased in bulk and restored to sell again. The initial "Windows XP Pro " sticker is still on the bottom of the Laptop and not damaged. Would that be of interest for the next step...like pertinant numbers or ?

Above I explain....[b/]

If it's operational, you should backup all drivers currently in the system to avoid having to find them later.

Could I do that by copying them to a cd from the system directly? and use the cd for the back up? Copy like all of the "windows' system/ system32 files or is it more sophisticated than I am thinking...( not a shock there if it is!!) [b/]

Where would I find that ? Could I do a typical "search" within explorer and find it or is it something to do with "dos" and out of my league?[b/]

....OUCHHHH! OOOH thats gonna leave a mark! Now I'm scared! I will definately need a compass to go in
there! Where can/ how can / what do i need to do to confirm ant of this in the "registry" I have a program called registry cleaner by "PC Registry Mechanic"??something like that on my Dell...would that be helpful? I could install it here and run it to get into the registry and make changes.....I am not this technically INCLINED mind you, and would be dangerous even in the store around someone working on the registry! help me understand where and how maybe I can find the info?![b/]

My greates fear in" NO GUARANTEE!!!
Hey I do appreciate you attention on this amd I now see the reality of this tough at best and I have work to do... I may be better to sell it without an OS....we'll see how I do! Thanks again my friend fopr you help! Lee Jones/b/]
