Solve : Running Ms-Dos outside of Windows?

Answer»

Hi there

I was wondering, is it possible to run MS-DOS outside of Windows XP with access to the Hard drive files? I ask, because I have some old programs I want to test that don't run from XP, and they run wayyyyy too slowly from CMD in windows...do I have to download 6.22 or is it already installed on my PC? BTW, I have a 500mhz processor with 156mb ram which is why things run slowly in windows...I find that my CPU usage is regularly at about 30-40%, or 100% if I'm running an AV program (other than resident protection).

Thanks for any help you can give me try www.download.com

you can get the Dos 6.22 or Windows 98 BOOT disc from there. It also has a utility to convert it from a floppy to a CD...which is nice!!So it would be possible to run it outside of xp? I presume I'd need to make a boot DISK on floppy first, then change the boot order in BIOS?

Cheers for your help I don't think you would be ABLE to run pure DOS on top of XP, or underneath it. If you are formatted NTFS, definitely not. If FAT32 maybe, but it will be a LOT of work. You could do this with some sort of PARTITION management tool, like Partition Magic, but you likely could solve the problem cheaper and safer by just buying an older DOS computer.Partition Magic
