Solve : safemode troubleshoot?

Answer»

[my problem]
I have a problem with my trouble shooting. It would seem that being in safe mode for some time will cause my operating system to shut off suddenly. what happens first is that I'll start to hear my fan run very hard and loud and usually when that happens it indicates my LAPTOP is about to shut off. my operating system runs just fine in normal mode. I'm still trying to learn what I can to help fix my error.

windows Vista compaq

BIOS Version/Date: Hewlett-Packard F.1f, 12/5/2007

antivirus: avast 5.0
antispyware: avast 5.0, malwarebytes, super antispyware

here's a overview of what I've tried to do so far.
[suggested things I've tried but still no resolve]
1) first I was suggested to download SafeBootKeyRepair.exe by sUBs to repair safe mode however the said program was not compatible with my operating system so I was not able to use that method.
2)second thing suggested to me was to run a sfc /scannow but I didn't find any errors in doing so and this did not solve my problem with safe mode shutting down after a while.
3)I did have some viruses at the time and was suggested to following a guide to removing them. some of the things I've done so far to try and fix this problem is checking for excess malware. I got rid of temporary files and cleaned with disk cleaner. I've used updated malwarebytes to scan my pc and also used avast 5.0 to scan to clean out viruses I had. I used super antispyware to help finish and got rid of some tracking cookies. I also used blacklight to scan for rootkits but found none. I was asked to post a hijack this log so someone could look at it. I was than asked to delete some entries in my hijack program after posting my log. after deleting specific entries in my hijack program I than turned off system restore and turned it back on so I could delete possible infected files in system restore. I ran avast and malwarebytes again to find anyting else. I followed up and posted another hijack this log for another evaluation and everything in the log seem to be okay.
after this whole process I tried to use safe mode and it seem to work for some time. safe mode ran much longer than it usually did so I suspected that it was possibly fixed. It ran for about 7 mins. I assumed it was working so I just rebooted into normal mode. usually it would run for about a couple MINUTES or just shut down before even loading when I noticed safe mode was shutting down. at this point I thought my safe mode troubleshoot had been solved.
days later after thinking my problem was solved. I noticed again I got another VIRUS so I cleaned it out with an updated malwarebytes. I scanned with avast. I also used super antispyware to get rid of tracking cookies after a full scan. the next morning I decided to boot in safe mode to quick scan with my malwarebytes for extra percaution. It ran for about 10-15 mins or so. the scan completed in safe mode and found nothing. I than closed my malwarebytes to open super antispyware to do a scan with that too but that's when I start to notice my fan starting to act up and working really hard. eventually my pc shut down before even finishing the scan. everything in normal mode seem to work just fine still.

I originally thought a virus was causing my laptop so shut down in safe mode but after going to all the steps to thoroughly purge my system of malwares and viruses my issue is still present. I have a feeling something else must be wrong.
can anyone offer me any more insight as to how I can resolve this.

I did a battery check but that seems to be in good condition.
I did a hp heath check to see If I could possible find a solution but I can't tell if any of these things on the list would be relevant to fixing my safe mode troubleshoot.

updates Frugal 1xSystem BIOS
updates Conexant HD FR Audio driver
updates HP wireless assistant
updates HP quick Play /DVD Play
Performance Informational: External display not detected when lid is closed
performance Informational: windows vista visual effects performance tuning
performance information: windows vista sound troubleshooting
performance Informational: windows vista Microphone troubleshooting.

do I need to Update my laptop's BIOS firmware? I don't quite know what the first item "furgal1xsystem bios" is.

do I need to check my fan setting for safe mode?
excuse any grammar errors, I'm proof reading here and there.
The only thing that comes to mind here is your normal fan control functions are loaded in Windows...but not in safe mode...
I wouldn't flash the BIOS for this condition...
Also it would be worth it to visit the Virus and Spyware section here and post the LOGS to see if they give you a clean bill of health.

PS. Why is it necessary to run in safemode so often ? ?Quote from: patio on March 16, 2010, 06:57:55 AM

alright thanks. I'm gonna check my fan settings. I just gonna figure out how to do that and what settings will keep it from shutting down so sudden. I wasn't sure if flashing my BIOS was gonna be helpful or not. I was hoping to get some insight about if I need to upgrade it or if my bios is affecting my condition. I'll also recheck and post another log just to be safe. I plan to try to install host files as soon as I become familiar with using them.

I just wanna be sure I have safe mode at hand because it's an extra tool I can use in case I need to use it when things aren't working normally in normal mode and can only work in safe mode. sometimes I'd come across some errors that required me to run a certain program in safe mode but I couldn't so I'd have to find an alternative. I'd like to be able to use safe mode also in case some functions become hijacked by a virus. I was told safe mode can disable some viruses functions like it's hijacking function. I'd like to have safe mode as an extra tool. someone told me that some viruses may hide in folders safe mode will MISS so I'll scan in normal mode first but I also read somewhere that safe mode can uncover some viruses hiding places in safe mode so I do scans in there too. This makes no sense.. as safe mode will or will not work dependant on the situation..Generally safe mode does work and you can learn nothing by utilising it continues or make it better.Quote from: Mulreay on March 16, 2010, 04:49:15 PM

It makes perfect sense. Read it again.

In either case, Safe mode is not safe from viruses at all. In fact, many strains make things worse when you boot in safe mode.

You need to stop listening to random someones. The only reason you'd be able to find something in safe mode and not normal mode is because a component of the virus that runs in normal mode wasn't running and you could now see what it was masking. However this is no longer quite so common since malware writers have stumbled upon the "safeboot" registry key enabling their rootkits to hide files even in safe mode.

"safe mode" applies to hardware issues with drivers; it is not designed to be a special virus busting mode of windows. Quote from: Mulreay on March 16, 2010, 04:49:15 PM

could you clarify a bit more for me please? I was just suggesting I would like to be able to use safe mode for the said functions in my post. Quote from: xaver_o on March 16, 2010, 05:08:00 PM

My apologies I was wrong.. follow the other posts. Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 16, 2010, 05:02:51 PM

oh interesting. so do you suggest not running scans in safe mode at all? like for older viruses? aside from viruses, my biggest concern is when i'm trying to fix an error and I'm instructed to use a certain program in safe mode. I'm worried of my pc shutting off suddenly while a program is running and causing damage. Quote from: Mulreay on March 16, 2010, 05:13:49 PM

that's quite alright. Initially I'm just trying to resolve my issue. I don't mind absorbing any extra feedback or knowledge along the way. Well, if you have an up to date AV, you're only going to be getting new viruses, not old ones, and many of the new ones are designed to also be infectious/active when you boot into safe mode.

Anyway- If you can run a tool in normal mode, there usually isn't much more it would be able to do in safe mode.

Either way, since your problem appears hardware/driver related all I can suggest is to maybe update those drivers. Do NOT update the BIOS just because of this issue. a PC that won't boot into safe mode is a lot better then one that doesn't boot at all.
